Mumbai's traffic woes are set to ease with the much-awaited launch of the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Metro's line 3, the city's first fully underground corridor.
The Phase 1 opening is set for July 2024 and will connect Aarey Colony in the north-central part of the city to Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), a major business district.

The first phase of Mumbai's Metro Line 3 from Aarey to Bandra Kurla Complex, will cover a distance of about 9.63 kilometers.
Mumbai Underground Metro: Timings
Commuters can look forward to frequent services. The metro is expected to run 260 services daily, with trains arriving every few minutes during operational hours. Timings are set between 6:30 am and 11:00 pm, catering to both morning and evening commutes. With a design speed of up to 90 kilometres per hour, the Aarey-BKC leg, which currently takes over two hours by road due to traffic congestion, will be covered in just 50 minutes.

The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) has undertaken this ambitious project and has invested over Rs 37,000 crore.

Mumbai Metro Line 3 is still under construction and specific details regarding ticket prices and exact timings are yet to be finalised.

Mumbai Underground Metro: Maintenance
The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) awarded Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) Ltd the contract for operation and maintenance of Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Metro's line 3. The MMRC in a release said the contract was awarded for 10 years, after an international competitive bidding process.
The DMRC will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the metro line, including management of the operation control centre, depot control centre, stations, running trains, maintenance of trains and all metro systems infrastructure, and ensuring the safety of passengers.
Once it's up and running, this Metro Line-3, which is the only fully underground metro in Mumbai, is expected to significantly improve the city's transportation. It will carry an estimated 1.7 million passengers daily, with trains coming every 3-4 minutes and carrying about 2,500 passengers each.
A few months ago the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation shared a few glimpses of the trial run of Metro Line-3. Various systems like rolling stock (coach), signal telecommunications, tracks traction etc., were being validated during the trial runs which were carried out between BKC and Aarey.
