Commuters on Mumbai road can soon heave a sigh of relief as the second phase of Mumbai Coastal Road is set to open on Tuesday. The tunnel will be operational from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. for five days a week, that is, Monday to Friday, and will remain closed on weekends as work continues.

The newly constructed road aims to significantly reduce travel time between south Mumbai and the western suburbs by 70% and cut fuel consumption by 34%.

The announcement was made by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation on Sunday.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde is scheduled to inspect the second underground tunnel of the Dharmaveer Swarajya Rakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Mumbai Coastal Road (South) on Monday.

What Is The Route

The newly constructed coastal route will facilitate travel from Marine Drive northward to Bhulabhai Desai Marg, Barrister Rajani Patel Chowk (Lotus Jetty), and Vatsalabai Desai Chowk (Haji Ali Chowk). The BMC also aims to open the phase up to Bindumadhav Thackeray Chowk by July 10, thereby enhancing northbound travel via the Mumbai Coastal Road Project. Moreover, the connection between the coastal road and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link is scheduled for completion by October 2024.

Coastal Road Project Details

The project is a 10.58-km stretch of road that is bound to connect Mumbai and Worli. The eight-lane road has a tunnel below, which has six lanes. Clear demarcations will be made for lanes assigned to buses on the road and the tunnel.

Excavation for the southbound tunnel began in January 2021 and was completed by January 2022. Notably, the tunnels are reinforced with a 375-mm-thick concrete cover, incorporating fire protection boards for added safety.
