Mumbai's long-awaited infrastructure development is nearing a significant milestone as the first phase of the Mumbai Metro Line 3 is gearing up to commence operations. Scheduled for commencement mid-year, this crucial phase of the metro line, spanning approximately 27 underground stations, promises to alleviate traffic congestion for millions of Mumbaikars.

Phase one of Mumbai Metro Line 3, anticipated to operate from Aarey to BKC, is undergoing testing and trials and recent progress indicates that the metro is on track for commissioning by July, Ashwini Bhide, managing director for Mumbai Metro Rail Corp., told ET.

Phase-two preparations are also in full swing, with work progressing across various packages, poised to expand the metro's reach further. Despite challenges, such as environmental clearances and land acquisition, the project remains steadfast in its commitment to delivering efficient and reliable public transportation solutions, Bhide said.

The first phase of Mumbai's Metro Line 3 from Aarey to Bandra Kurla Complex, will cover a distance of about 9.63 kilometers.

Following trial runs between BKC and Aarey, officials will soon reach out to get certifications from different systems and an Independent Safety Assessor. Then the project will be presented to the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety for inspection and approval.

Once it's up and running, this Metro Line-3, which is the only fully underground metro in Mumbai, is expected to significantly improve the city's transportation. It will carry an estimated 1.7 million passengers daily, with trains coming every 3-4 minutes and carrying about 2,500 passengers each.
