The Southwest Monsoon has officially set in over Kerala and advanced into most parts of North-East India, the India Meteorological Department said on Thursday. The monsoon arrived a day early compared to the earlier prediction of May 31.

On May 29, the weather agency stated that the conditions continue to remain favourable for Southwest Monsoon onset over Kerala during the next 24 hours.

Earlier this month, IMD had stated that the Southwest Monsoon is expected to arrive in Kerala around May 31 with a model error of ±4 days.

Prevailing Heatwave conditions

India has witnessed some harsh climate conditions during the last few weeks with many parts of the country facing intense heatwaves. As per the latest update, IMD has stated that these prevailing heat wave to severe heat wave conditions over Northwest and Central India are likely to reduce gradually from May 30 onwards.

On Wednesday, one of the weather stations in Delhi recorded a temperature of 52.9 degrees celsius, the highest ever.

In its monsoon bulletin, the weather department has stated that the country is likely to see 'above normal' rainfall during the monsoon season between June and September 2024.

The southwest monsoon seasonal rainfall over the country as a whole is likely to be 106% of the long-period average with a model error of ± 4%, the IMD stated in a press release on May 27.

When will the Monsoon arrive in Mumbai

As per the latest forecast, monsoon rains are expected to arrive in Mumbai around June 10. Typically, the monsoon rains hit the island city by June 11. In 2023, this was delayed due to weather disturbance created by Cyclone Biparjoy.

When will the Monsoon arrive in Delhi

Monsoon typically makes an appearance in Delhi by the end of June. As per IMD's long-range forecast, the monsoon should arrive in the capital city somewhere between June 25 and 30. However, no official confirmation has been provided by the weather officials.

In 2023, the monsoon arrived in Delhi on June 25 and this was the first time since 1961 that the monsoon arrived in the capital city and island city (Mumbai) at the same time.

Delhi is currently facing severe heatwave conditions with IMD issuing red alert for the capital city as temperatures in the city reached around 46-50 degrees Celsius.

When will the Monsoon arrive in Bengaluru

According to IMD officials, Bengaluru is expected to see the onset of monsoon by June 13 or 14 and monsoon rains could enter Karnataka towards the end of the first week of June. Usually, the Monsoon enters the Karnataka coast by June 6 or 7 and gradually spreads over the south-interior areas by June 14.

But with the Monsoon arriving in Kerala a day earlier, the monsoon season might see an advancement in other parts of the country by ±1 day.

IMD had earlier stated that the conditions also continue to become favourable for further advancement of Southwest Monsoon into some more parts of the South Arabian Sea, remaining parts of Maldives and Comorin area; some parts of Lakshadweep area; some more parts of Southwest & Central Bay of Bengal, Northeast Bay of Bengal and some parts of Northeastern states during the same period.
