Nifty, Sensex Close At Record Levels After Four-Day Rally: Closing Bell
Benchmark indices in India continued to rally in the fourth consecutive session and hit their highest ever closing levels due to gains in the shares of financial services and IT stocks.
The Nifty 50 rose 213.40 points or 1% to record the highest closing of 21,654.75 points and the Sensex ended at 72,038.43 for the first time up 0.98% or 701.63 points. Intraday, the Nifty renewed its lifetime high to 21.675.75 points and the Sensex hit 72,119.85, its all-time high level.
Pankaj Pandey, head of Research at ICICI direct, said, "Global and domestic cues are looking quite good for the market...Our sense is that the positive momentum is going to sustain in the market probably to levels like 22,200...there will be a correction in between, but in general, we expect the market to keep doing well for the next month..with a target of 22,200..overall, the good run is expected to sustain. "
Chandan Taparia, head of technical & derivatives research at Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd said, "Market is making the base to start the next leg of the rally. The market has strong positive momentum...and utilise small declines as buying opportunity."
Globally, the sentiment was uplifted by the expectations of interest rate cuts by the U.S. Federal Reserve in March. European markets opened higher on Wednesday and Asian markets closed higher. In Japan, indices rose after Bank of Japan board members discussed the potential timing of ending the negative rate policy during their meeting last week, with several members indicating they see no rush to make the move.
Shares of HDFC Bank Ltd., Infosys Ltd., Larsen & Toubro Ltd., Bharti Airtel Ltd., and ICICI Bank Ltd., contributed the most to the gains.
Meanwhile those of NTPC Ltd., Adani Enterprises Ltd., Oil and Natural Gas Corp Ltd., Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd., and Cipla Ltd. capped the upside.
Most sectoral indices rose with Nifty PSU Bank, Nifty Metal and Nifty Bank leading. Nifty PSE, Nifty Oil & Gas, and Nifty Energy fell.
The broader markets underperformed as the BSE MidCap rose 0.41%, while the BSE SmallCap was 0.20% higher. Fifteen out of the 20 sectors compiled by the BSE advanced, while five declined. S&P BSE Metal and S&P BSE Auto rose the most.
The market breadth was skewed in favour of buyers. Around 1,992 stocks rose, 1,812 stocks declined, and 110 remained unchanged.

UltraTech Cement Ltd.'s market capitalisation crossed the Rs 3 lakh crore mark as its shares hit an all-time high on Wednesday.
The company's market value hit at Rs 3.01 lakh crore, while its scrip rose as much as 4.29% to a record of Rs 10,448.5 apiece. It later pared gains to trade 4.1% higher at Rs 10.430.9 per share as of 2:50 p.m.

Nifty Hits Fresh Lifetime High On Gains In Banks, RIL: Midday Market Update
The benchmark NSE Nifty 50 extended gains through midday and hit a new lifetime high on Wednesday, with banking stocks contributing the most to the gains. Sensex also extended gains and was trading 100 points away from its lifetime high.
As of 12:08 p.m., Nifty was 158.85 points, or 0.74% higher at 21,600.20, while Sensex was up 523.05 points, or 0.73% at 71,859.85.
"Overall, the market is leaning towards positive, and it looks like the year will end on a positive note," said Shrey Jain, founder and chief executive officer of SAS Online.
"There's expected to be strong resistance when the index reaches 21,500...If it manages to break through this level decisively, it could lead to a significant increase in the index," he said.
Bharti Airtel Ltd., HDFC Bank Ltd., Infosys Ltd., Larsen & Toubro Ltd., and Reliance Industries Ltd. were positively contributing to changes in the Nifty.
While, Asian Paints Ltd., Britannia Industries Ltd., NTPC Ltd., ITC Ltd. and Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. were weighing the index.
All sectoral indices gained except Nifty PSE. Nifty PSU Bank, Nifty Metal, Nifty Auto, and Nifty Commodities gained over 1%.
The broader markets also rose, with BSE MidCap gaining 0.71% and BSE SmallCap advancing 0.45%.
Nineteen of the 20 sectors compiled by BSE advanced. S&P BSE Services declined.
The market breadth was skewed in the favour of buyers. As many as 2,238 stocks advanced, 1,398 declined and 153 remained unchanged on the BSE.

Coromandel International Falls After Ammonia Gas Leak
Shares of Coromandel International Ltd. fell nearly 4% after PTI reported that Ammonia gas leaked from a fertiliser manufacturing unit at Ennore in north Chennai and several people have been hospitalised.
The company, in a statement said that it noticed abnormality on Tuesday in the ammonia unloading subsea pipeline near shoreside, outside the plant premises. "Our Standard Operating Procedure activated immediately, and we have isolated ammonia system facility and brought the situation to normalcy in the shortest time," the company said.

Cupid Shares Locked In Upper Circuit Limit
Shares of Cupid Ltd were locked in an upper circuit on Wednesday after Columbia Petrol Chem Pvt. Ltd and Aditya Halwasiya acquired stake in the company.

Sensex, Nifty Open Higher As ICICI Bank, Infosys, L&T Gain: Opening Bell
Benchmark indices continued their rally in the fourth consecutive session today and opened higher as shares of IT companies and banks led the gains.
At pre-open, the S&P BSE Sensex Index was up 142.87 points, or 0.20%, at 71,479.67, while the NSE Nifty 50 was 56.30 points or 0.26% higher at 21,497.65.
"The 21000 would be the crucial support zone as of now and as mentioned earlier, would need a decisive breach above the important resistance zone of 21550 levels to carry on with the momentum and confirm a breakout for further rise in the coming days," said Prabhudas Lilladher in a report. "The support for the day is seen at 21300 zone while the resistance is seen at 21600 level."
"BankNifty has been in consolidation for quite some time near 47800 zone witnessing a pullback from 47400 levels and would need a decisive breach above 48200 zone to confirm a breakout for further fresh upward move," the report added.
Shares of Larsen & Toubro Ltd., Infosys Ltd., UltraTech Cement Ltd., ICICI Bank Ltd., and Reliance Industries Ltd., contributed the most to the gains.
Meanwhile, those of Asian Paints Ltd., Britannia Industries Ltd., Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd., NTPC Ltd., and Maruti Suzuki Ltd., capped the upside.
All sectoral indices gained with Nifty Energy and Nifty IT gaining the most while Nifty FMCG and Nifty Bank gained the least.
The broader markets outperformed benchmarks; the S&P BSE MidCap Index was up 0.63%, whereas S&P BSE SmallCap Index was 0.66% higher.
All 20 sectors compiled by BSE advanced.. S&P BSE Commodities rose the most.
The market breadth was skewed in the favour of the buyers. About 2,319 stocks rose, 647 declined, while 99 remained unchanged on the BSE.

GIFT Nifty Trades Above 21,500
The December futures contract of the GIFT Nifty contract traded 0.09% higher at 21,550 as of 07:47 a.m.
Indices in Japan and Australia tracked their US peers and opened higher on hopes of an interest interest rate cut by the US Federal Reserve in March. South Korea's Kospi, however, fell.
In Australia, the gains were led by miners, reflecting higher iron ore prices. Wall Street kicked off the final week of 2023 with gains in stocks, extending a rally that put the market on the brink of a record, Bloomberg reported.
Brent crude was trading 0.20% lower at $80.91 per barrel. Gold was down 0.07% at $2,066.4 an ounce.
India's benchmark indices ended higher for the third day on Tuesday, despite starting the day flat, as HDFC Bank Ltd., Reliance Industries Ltd. and Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd. gained.
The NSE Nifty 50 ended 91.95 points, or 0.43%, higher at 21,441.35, while the S&P BSE Sensex closed 229.84 points, or 0.32%, up at 71,336.80.
Overseas investors remained net sellers of Indian equities for the sixth consecutive session on Tuesday. Foreign portfolio investors offloaded stocks worth Rs 95.20 crore, while domestic institutional investors turned net buyers and mopped up stocks worth Rs 167.04 crore, the NSE data showed.
