Dogs’ Day Out: When Brexit Voters Brought Pets to Polling Stations

On the Brexit referendum day, it’s pouring rain as well as adorable dogs in the United Kingdom.

Before polling began in the much anticipated Brexit referendum, Philip Cowley, a British political scientist and academic at Queen Mary University of London tweeted out a list of 10 predictions for polling day.

Number three on his list was this:

And boy, was he right! As torrential rains lashed out in parts of London and south-east England, voters waded through waterlogged streets to cast their votes, and they brought their canine companions along.

#dogsatpollingstations has become a raging hashtag on Twitter, as people posted pictures of their dogs at the station.

It all started in 2015, during the General Elections, when English journalist Evan Davis asked:

That single tweet opened up a fantastic trend on Twitter, and the hashtag #dogsatpollingstations was coined.

A year later, the trend continues, and is keeping the morale of voters high on an overcast polling day.
