The government of Goa has declared an increase in the value-added tax on petrol and diesel, starting Saturday. This adjustment will result in a rise of Rs 1 for petrol and Rs 36 for diesel, an official confirmed to PTI. The notification regarding the rise was released on Friday by Pranab G. Bhat, the undersecretary (finance) in the state government.

The current price of petrol in Goa is Rs 95.40 per litre, while it is Rs 87.90 per litre for diesel, the official said.

Leader of the Opposition and senior Congress leader Yuri Alemao called it the act of an "insensitive government" and said the hike must be withdrawn immediately. The Pramod Sawant-led government must curb wasteful expenditure instead of carrying out such hikes, he said.

"The state government wants to break the backbone of the common people. Just recently, they hiked the power tariff and today, we have a rise in petrol and diesel prices," Alemao said.

Last week, the Karnataka government hiked the sales tax on fuel, which will make petrol and diesel more expensive. In a notification issued by the Finance Department, the government hiked the sales tax on petrol by 3.92%, making it 29.84% from the previous 25.92%.

Petrol will now go up by Rs 3 and diesel by Rs 3.5 per litre in Karnataka.
