Keir Starmer, leader of Britain’s Labour Party, has emerged victorious in the recent parliamentary elections, securing a path to 10 Downing Street as Prime Minister. The incoming British premier's stance on India will be crucial, considering the ongoing talks between the two nations over a long-awaited trade deal.
Starmer's Stance Towards India
Starmer has actively worked to mend Labour's ties with the Indian diaspora, which had felt marginalised during Jeremy Corbyn's leadership due to perceived anti-India sentiments concerning Kashmir. Starmer is known for his social liberalism and fiscal moderation. As Prime Minister, he is expected to prioritise strengthening diplomatic relations, promoting trade, and fostering cooperation between the UK and India.
During a recent speech, Starmer emphasised the importance of a robust partnership with India, highlighting mutual interests in global security, climate resilience, and economic stability. "A Labour government under my leadership will aim to forge a relationship grounded in our shared values of democracy and aspiration," he said.
In his 2024 election manifesto, Starmer outlined commitments to establishing a "new strategic partnership with India", including negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement and deeper collaboration across security, education, technology, and climate change initiatives. Earlier this year, he visited the Shree Swaminarayan Temple in Kingsbury, north London, where he reassured the Hindu community of his commitment to combating Hinduphobia in Britain.
Who Is Keir Starmer
Starmer, 61, grew up in a small town in Surrey, just outside London. His mother worked for Britain’s National Health Service, while his father was a toolmaker. The Labour Party leader went on to become a centrist human rights lawyer.
When Starmer was elected to lead the party in 2020, he faced an uphill battle. In 2019, Labour had suffered its worst general election defeat in 85 years. Starmer’s mission was clear: make Labour electable again. Now, after 14 years of Conservative Party rule, Starmer is set to become Britain’s next Prime Minister.
After 2020, Starmer worked to drag Labour back toward the center of British politics, broadening its appeal to voters. The party also capitalised on years of economic challenges and political chaos under the Conservatives.
Throughout his election campaign, Starmer has portrayed himself as a leader committed to bring change and repair the damage caused by the turmoil resulting from frequent leadership changes within the divided Conservative Party in recent years.
Starmer's party also affirmed a boost to funding for public services without resorting to significant tax hikes, all while tackling public debt and managing immigration.
