ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024: West Indies registered the fifth-highest total in the history of the T20 World Cup during a Group C match against Afghanistan at Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet, St Lucia on Tuesday, June 18. Put into bat by Rashid Khan-led Afghanistan, West Indies piled on 218 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in their allotted 20 overs. West Indies won the match by 104 runs.
Nicholas Pooran was the chief destroyer with 98 runs in 53 balls which included six fours and eight sixes. Pooran was ably supported by opener Johnson Charles as they stitched a 80-run partnership for the second wicket in just six overs. West Indies lost Brandon King early in the innings but the duo of Pooran and Charles took a liking to Afghanistan's pace bowlers smashing them around the park.
The duo also added Azmatullah Omarzai in an unwanted list as the Afghanistan all-rounder registered the joint most expensive over in T20 World Cup history. Omarzai conceded 36 runs in the fourth over of the innings which included three sixes and three fours. The over also included a no-ball and the subsequent free-hit saw Omarzai concede an additional five runs as extras via wides.
West Indies raced to 92/1 in six overs and registered the highest powerplay score in T20 World Cups, beating Netherlands' 91/1 vs Ireland in Sylhet, Bangladesh in the 2014 T20 World Cup.
