India will take on defending champions England in the second semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2024 in Providence, Guyana on Thursday. England booked their place in the semi-final with a 10-wicket win against co-hosts USA, while India put the finishing touches to a perfect Super 8s stage with a 24-run win over Australia.
The Rohit Sharma-led team will face off against England for the first time in T20Is since their semi-final clash in the 2022 T20 World Cup. Let's take a look at the head-to-head numbers ahead of the important knockout game:
India vs England Head To Head In T20
India and England have faced each other on 23 occasions in T20Is. The 'Men in Blue' have emerged victorious 12 times whereas England has won 11 matches. In T20 World Cups, India and England have met four times with both teams emerging victorious twice.
India faced England for the first time in a T20 game during the 2007 ICC World Twenty20 in South Africa. In the Super 8 game, India defeated England by 18 runs at Kingsmead, Durban. The man of the match, Yuvraj Singh dispatched Stuart Broad for six sixes in the 19th over of India's innings as the left-hander raced to his fifty off just 12 balls.
India vs England T20 World Cup 2022 Semi-Final
India suffered a 10-wicket drubbing at the hands of England in the second semifinal which ended their campaign at the T20 World Cup 2022 on an embarrassing note in Adelaide. England entered the final where they took on Pakistan at the MCG and eventually won the tournament.
England won the toss and elected to field first at the Adelaide Oval. It was Hardik Pandya (68 off 33 balls), whose fearless hitting took India to 168 for six but it was just about a par-score.
England captain Buttler (80 not out) set the tone with three boundaries off Bhuvneshwar Kumar's opening over but it was Hales (86 not out off) who butchered the Indian attack into submission with India badly missing a leg-spinner in its line-up.
England prevented an India-Pakistan final by achieving the target in just 16 overs.
The England opening duo gave India's star-studded line-up a lesson in how to build a T20 innings: that there is only one way, the offensive way. It was one match that was decided in Powerplay as India managed only 38 runs in six overs as the archaic style of safety-first approach hurt them terribly.
In complete contrast, England's top order which looked shaky throughout the league stage, smashed 63 in their six overs. The match was won and lost then and there.
Brief Scores:
India: 168 for 6 in 20 overs (Hardik Pandya 63, Virat Kohli 50; Chris Jordan 3/43, Adil Rashid 1/20).
England: 170 for no loss in 16 overs (Alex Hales 86, Jos Buttler 80; Arshdeep Singh 15/0).
