Zimbabwe

The hosts who were placed 2nd in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers 2023 before their match against Scotland became the third team to be eliminated from the Super Six competition and thereby ending any hopes of qualification for the ICC World Cup.

Zimbabwe were termed as one of the favorites after their dominating performances in the group stages but they were undone by the brilliance of the Scottish team which broke the back of Zimbabwe's batting which had been scoring runs at will in most of their previous games.

Let's look at the chances of Scotland and Netherlands and who can guarantee a qualification to the ICC World Cup.

Scotland

The Scottish team is currently placed 2nd in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers 2023 - Super Six Points Table with six points and a positive net run rate of 0.296.

Scotland started the Super Six stage with a dominating performance by beating former champions West Indies by 7 wickets. The manner of the win ensured a much superior run rate than that of Zimbabwe and Netherlands. But it was the game against Zimbabwe which took place on the 4th of July which sent some shockers down the cricketing world.

Scotland was very much the underdog going into this game but they outshone Zimbabwe thanks to Chris Sole who broke the spine of Zim batting and ensured their middle/lower order are left with the much tougher task of chasing a moderate score of 234. Scotland eventually won the game by 31 runs.

Can Scotland qualify for the World Cup after losing against Netherlands?

Scotland can still guarantee qualification even if they end up losing against the Netherlands side. Scotland has a superior run rate than that of the Netherlands and a win for the latter will mean both teams end up with 6 points each, and the net run rate will decide who goes ahead. And for this to happen Scotland has to ensure they end up losing by not more than 30 runs or not let Netherlands chase their target with 36 balls to spare.

Netherlands

The Dutch team are currently placed 4th in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers 2023 - Super Six Points Table with four points and a net run rate of -0.042.
