Nifty, Sensex End Flat As HDFC Bank, Titan Weigh: Closing Bell
Benchmark equity indices remained subdued on the first day of the week as gains in the shares of ITC and Reliance were offset by the fall in HDFC Bank and Titan Company.
Both the Nifty and Sensex ended flat at 24320.55 and 79960.38 points respectively. Intraday, the fell as much as 0.3% .
"The market is turning to a consolidation phase due to the absence of major triggers to support the current premium valuation in the near term, prompting investors to book some profits, "said Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Financial Services. He added that with stable input prices and ongoing price cuts, the period of margin expansion appears to be concluding, which is likely to affect earnings and valuations.
Shares of ITC Ltd., Reliance Industries Ltd., Infosys Ltd., Oil & Natural Gas Ltd., and Hindustan Unilever Ltd. contributed the most to the gains.
But those of HDFC Bank Ltd, Titan Co. Ltd., Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., Tata Steel Ltd., and Divi's Laboratories Ltd. pulled the Nifty lower.
Most sectoral indices ended lower with Nifty PSU Bank being the top loser.
Broader indices underperformed. The S&P BSE Midcap ended 0.14% lower and the S&P BSE Smallcap fell 0.22%.
Thirteen out of the 20 sectoral indices on the BSE ended lower. S&P BSE FMCG was the top gainer.
The market breadth was skewed in the favour of sellers. Around 2,254 stocks advanced, 1,804 rose, and 111 remained unchanged on the BSE.

Nifty, Sensex Near Day's Low As HDFC Bank, Titan Weigh: Midday Market Update
The NSE Nifty 50 snapped its three-session winning streak and traded near day's low through midday on Monday as HDFC Bank and Titan Co. dragged. The volatility index surged over 7% after falling for four consecutive sessions.
At 11:53 a.m., the Nifty was at 24,299.30, down 0.10% or 24.55 points, and the S&P BSE Sensex was at 79,905.77, down 0.11% or 100 points.
There are signs of fatigue at higher levels, according to Milan Vaishnav, founder of Gemstone Equity Research. But in the near-term, he has a neutral to bullish view.
Vaishnav has pegged near-term support at 24,000, which continues to have maximum put open interest. On the upside, the index may go to 24,500–24,800 levels, which has the highest call open interest.
Shares of HDFC Bank Ltd., Titan Co., ICICI Bank Ltd., Larsen & Toubro Ltd. and Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd. dragged the Nifty the most.
Reliance Industries Ltd., Infosys Ltd., ITC Ltd., Hindustan Unilever Ltd. and Oil & Natural Gas Corp. cushioned the fall.
The Nifty FMCG was the top sectoral gainer and among the four indices that rose on the NSE.
The broader indices underperformed as the BSE MidCap and the SmallCap fell 0.3% each.
Sixteen out of the 20 sectoral indices on the BSE declined, with Consumer Durables falling the most.
The market breadth was skewed in the favour of the sellers as 2,219 stocks fell, 1,669 rose and 159 remained unchanged on the BSE.

Shares of the company rose as much as 10.75% to hit record high of 513.70 apiece. Its trading 5.04% higher at Rs 513.70 apiece, as of 9:26 a.m. This compares to a 0.04% decline in the NSE Nifty 50 Index.
It has risen 253.65% in the last 12 months. Total traded volume so far in the day stood at 12 times its 30-day average. The relative strength index was at 72.04, indicating the stock is overbought.
Both the analysts tracking the company maintain a 'buy' call on the stock, according to Bloomberg data. The average 12-month consensus price target implies a downside of 4.3%.

Titan Shares Hit One- Month Low On Subdued Growth In Jewellery Business
Shares of Titan Co. fell nearly 4% on Monday after it reported subdued growth in the sales of its Jewellery segment.
The Tata Group company's domestic jewellery operations grew 8% year-on-year impacted by higher gold prices and lower wedding days, it said in a business update last week. Domestic growth came largely through an increase in average selling prices whereas buyer growth was in low single digits.
Titan's stock fell as much as 4.12% during the day to Rs 3,204 apiece on the NSE, the lowest since June 4. It was trading 3.7% lower at Rs 3,147 apiece, compared to a 0.03% advance in the benchmark Nifty 50 as of 9:35 a.m.
It has risen 3.3% in the last 12 months and declined 14% on a year-to-date basis. The total traded volume so far in the day stood at 7.4 times its 30-day average. The relative strength index was at 30.
Sixteen out of the 31 analysts tracking the company have a 'buy' rating on the stock, 10 recommend a 'hold' and five suggest a 'sell', according to Bloomberg data. The average of 12-month analyst price targets implies a potential upside of 15%.

Benchmark equity indices snapped their three-day winning streak and opened lower as private banks weighed on them.
At pre-open, the Nifty was flat at 24329.45 and the Sensex was lower by 0.1% at 79915.00.
"We are positive on the Index (Nifty 50) with a buy-on-dip recommendation," said Aditya Gaggar, director of Progressive Shares. "The immediate support is placed at 24,150 while for the time being, the higher side is capped at a cluster of 24,450-24,570." He added that the bearish divergence in Bank Nifty is likely to restrict the upside of the Index.
Shares of ICICI Bank Ltd., Titan Co. Ltd., HDFC Bank Ltd., Infosys Ltd., and State Bank Of India Ltd. dragged the Nifty.

GIFT Nifty Trades Near 24,400
The July futures contract of the GIFT Nifty was trading 23.5 points or 0.1% lower at 24,384.50 as of 07:18 a.m.
Most markets in the Asia-Pacific region were trading lower with Hong Kong's Hang Seng falling the most by over 1%. Japan's Nikkei and South Korea's Kospi traded 0.1% lower.
The September contract of Brent crude was trading 0.17% lower at $86.39 per barrel on the International Continental Exchange as of 06:59 a.m. The spot gold was down 0.30% at $2,384.98.
US stock market ended the week at all-time highs with traders focusing on prospects for Federal Reserve rate cuts. In the post-holiday session, the S&P 500 index and Nasdaq Composite rose by 0.54% and 0.04%, respectively. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.17%.
Indian benchmarks rose for the fifth week to record the best streak of weekly gains in over six months. Meanwhile, the indices erased loss during the last leg of trade on Friday, tracking gains in shares of Reliance Industries Ltd., State Bank of India, and Larsen & Toubro Ltd.
The NSE Nifty 50 settled 21.70 points, or 0.1%, higher at 24,323.85, and the S&P BSE Sensex ended 53.07 points, or 0.1%, lower at 79,996.60.
Overseas investors remained net buyers of Indian equities for the second consecutive day on Friday. Foreign portfolio investors mopped up stocks worth Rs 1,241.3 crore, while domestic institutional investors stayed net sellers for the third session and sold equities worth Rs 1,651.4 crore, according to provisional data from the National Stock Exchange.
The Indian currency closed flat at Rs 83.49 against the US dollar.
