Stock Market Today: Sensex, Nifty Log Worst Session In Over A Week As Banking Shares Drag

Sensex, Nifty Log Worst Session In Over A Week As Banking Shares Weigh: Closing Bell

Benchmark Indian equity indices ended lower in the second consecutive session to log their worst session since August 5 as shares of banks weighed on them.

HDFC Bank fell in today's session after the weightage of the private lender in MSCI India Domestic Index decreased 0.20% to 8.31%. Meanwhile, it got an expected weight increase in MSCI Global Standard Index.

The Nifty closed 0.85% or 208 points lower at 24139.0 and the Sensex closed 0.87% or 692.89 points lower at 78956.03. Intraday, the both the Nifty and Sensex fell 0.95%.

"With a big red candle, the index is comfortably back in the range of 23,960-24,400," said Aditya Gaggar, director of Progressive Shares. "We advise to wait until the Index provides a clear picture by violating either range."

Shares of HDFC Bank Ltd., State Bank Of India, Bajaj Finance Ltd., Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd., and Tata Motors Ltd. dragged the Nifty. While those of Titan Co. Ltd., Reliance Industries Ltd., Apollo Hospitals Enterprises Ltd., HCL Technologies Ltd., and Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. minimised the losses.

All sectoral indices ended lower except Nifty IT, which ended flat.

Broader markets underperformed benchmark indices. The BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices settled 0.94% and 1.14% lower, respectively.

On BSE, 19 sectoral indices out of 20 ended lower and one advanced. The BSE Commodities declined the most, while BSE Consumer durables emerged as the best performing sector.

Market breadth was skewed in favour of sellers. Around 2,657 stocks declined, 1,282 stocks rose, and 87 stocks remained unchanged on BSE.

Nifty, Sensex Fall As HDFC Bank, Tata Motors, Grasim Weigh: Midday Market Update

India's key stock indices fell through midday on Tuesday, following a flat opening, weighed by index heavyweights HDFC Bank Ltd., Tata Motors Ltd., and Grasim Industries Ltd.

At 11:45 p.m., the NSE Nifty 50 was trading 0.12%, or 28 points, lower at 24,314.10, and the BSE Sensex fell 0.16%, or 128 points, to trade at 79,520.92. The Nifty had opened flat at 24,342.35, and the Sensex opened 0.12% lower to 79,552.51.

"The market is expected to remain range-bound as investors await key US inflation data. Despite this, sector-specific movements are likely, and any significant declines may present buying opportunities. The overall market sentiment remains bullish due to strong economic data and positive quarterly results," said Vikas Jain, head of research at Reliance Securities.

Shares of Reliance Industries Ltd., Titan Company Ltd., Bharti Airtel Ltd. and Larsen and Toubro Ltd. contributed the most to the gains in the Nifty 50.

While those of HDFC Bank Ltd., Tata Motors Ltd., and Grasim Industries Ltd. weighed on the index.

On NSE, seven sectors advanced and five declined. The NSE Nifty Pharma rose the most, while the NSE Nifty Finance fell the most.

The broader indices were trading in the green, with the BSE Midcap and Smallcap gaining 0.07% and 0.23%, respectively, through midday on Tuesday.

Eight sectoral indices on the BSE were trading in the red, led by BSE Financial Services. Twelve were trading higher, with BSE Consumer Durables in the lead.

The market breadth was skewed in the favour of the sellers. Around 1,902 stocks declined, 1,808 advanced, and 145 remained unchanged on the BSE.

KPI Green Hits Lower Circuit 

On Tuesday, the company opened its QIP and set the floor price at Rs 983 per share. The stocl hit 5% lower circuit and fell to Rs 1,043.90, the lowest level since Aug 12. Shares of Hindustan Copper Ltd. rose 5.53% to Rs 319.50, the highest level since Aug 1. It pared gains to trade 3.19% higher at Rs 312.40 as of 10:34 a.m., as compared to 0.22% decline in the NSE Nifty index.

The scrip gained 105.94% in 12 months, and 14.6% on year to date basis. Total traded volume so far in the day stood at 4.0 times its 30-day average. The relative strength index was at 49.65.

Benchmark equity indices saw a muted opening after closing flat in the previous session as gains in the shares of offset some impact of losses in HDFC Bank, which fell over 2%.

At pre-open, the Nifty was flat at 24342.35 and the Sensex was at 79552.51, down 0.12% or 96.41 points.

"We believe the current intraday market structure is volatile, hence level based trading would be the ideal strategy for day traders," said Shrikant Chouhan, head of equity research at Kotak Securities.

"For the Bulls, 24500/80100 would be the immediate breakout zone," he said adding that above this, the market could rally towards 24700-24900/80600-81200. "On the other hand, a close below 24200/79200 the sentiment could change and the market can retest 24000-23800/78600-78000 levels," he said.

Shares of ICICI Bank Ltd., Axis Bank Ltd., Reliance Industries Ltd., Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd., and Tata Consultancy Services Ltd contributed the most to the gains.

While those of HDFC Bank Ltd., Tata Motors Ltd., Power Grid Corp. Ltd., Asian Paints Ltd., and Hindustan Unilever Ltd weighed.

Most sectoral indices were higher with Nifty Media gaining the most and Nifty Financial Services fell the most.

GIFT Nifty Trades Above 24,300

Indices in Asia-Pacific region rose in early trade tracking Japan's benchmarks' gains on weaker yen, while investors await for US CPI data, due late Wednesday.

The Nikkei 225 was 782.56 points, or 2.23% higher at 35,807.56, and the S&P ASX 200 was up 2.90 points, or 0.04% at 7,816.60 as of 06:27 a.m.

The S&P 500 ended flat, while Nasdaq Composite rose 0.21%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended 0.36% lower.

The October contract of brent crude was trading on Intercontinental Exchange 0.62% lower at $81.79 per barrel as of 06:29 a.m.

The spot Gold was trading 0.04% lower at $2,471.79 as of 06:30 a.m.

The GIFT Nifty was trading 26.50 points, or 0.11% higher at 24,370.00 as of 06:31 a.m.

The Indian benchmark indices erased some loss to end Monday on a muted note as Infosys Ltd. and HDFC Bank Ltd. led the gains. The NSE Nifty 50 ended 20.50 points, or 0.08% lower at 24,347, while the S&P BSE Sensex closed down 56.99 points or 0.07% at 79,648.92.

Overseas investors turned net sellers on Monday. Foreign Portfolio Investors offloaded equities worth Rs 4,680.5 crore, while domestic investors remained net buyers for the seventh consecutive session and mopped up equities worth Rs 4,477.7 crore, according to provisional data from the National Stock Exchange.

The Indian currency closed at a record  low of 83.97 against the US dollar.
