Sensex, Nifty Resume Declines After One-Day Breather As Infosys, RIL Weigh: Closing Bell

Benchmark equity indices erased its initial gains after the monetary policy maintained status quo and ended lower as the RBI governor's commentary was hawkish while also tracking European markets and some Asian indices which closed with losses.

The Nifty ended 0.81% or 197 points lower at 24,100.50 and the Sensex fell 0.73% or 581.79 points to close at 78886.22. Intraday, the Nifty fell as much as 0.90% and the Sensex fell 0.84%.

"The Index is oscillating in a wide range where the downside seems to be protected at 23,965 near 50 day moving average while the higher side is capped at 24,330, bearish gap zone, and a breakout on either side is a must for a clear picture," said Aditya Gaggar, director of Progressive Shares.

Shares of Infosys Ltd. Reliance Industries Ltd., Larsen & Toubro Ltd., ICICI Bank Ltd., and Asian Paints Ltd. pulled the Nifty lower.

While those of HDFC Bank Ltd., Tata Motors Ltd., Bharti Airtel Ltd., HDFC Life Insurance Co., and ITC Ltd. cushioned the fall.

Most sectoral indices were lower with Nifty IT being the top loser.

Market breadth was skewed in favour of sellers. Around 2,113 stocks declined, 1,787 stocks rose, and 107 stocks remained unchanged on BSE.

Broader markets outperformed benchmark indices. The BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices ended 0.44% and 0.16% lower, respectively.

On BSE, all sectors ended lower except BSE Healthcare out of 20. The BSE Metal declined the most and was the worst performing sector.

Sensex, Nifty Open Lower Ahead Of MPC Outcome As Infosys Drags: Opening Bell

Benchmark equity indices were back in the red after one-day rise with Infosys dragging them by the most. The market now awaits the outcome of monetary policy meeting due later in the session.

At pre-open, the Nifty traded at 24248.55, down 0.20% or 48.95 points and the Sensex was at 79420.81, down 0.06% or 47.20 points.

According to Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research, Kotak Securities, "As long as the market stays above this (24150/79150) level, the upward movement is likely to persist." He said Nifty and Sensex could rise to 24400-25550/80000-80450. "On the contrary, below 24150/79150, it may retest 24050-23900/78800- 78300 levels," he added. "A drop below 23900/78300 could push the indices to 23650/77500 levels."

Shares of Infosys Ltd., Reliance Industries Ltd., Larsen & Toubro Ltd., Bharti Airtel Ltd., and Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. dragged the Nifty.

While those of HDFC Bank Ltd., ITC Ltd., Tata Motors Ltd., Titan Co. Ltd., and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd cushioned the fall.

Most sectoral indices were lower at open with Nifty IT being the top loser. Nifty Pharma hit its record high in the second consecutive session.

Broader indices were mixed. BSE Midcap fell 0.18% and BSE Smallcap rose 0.49%.

Twelve out of 20 sectoral indices on the BSE fell and eight rose. BSE Oil & Gas was the top loser.

Market breadth was skewed in the favour of buyers. As many as 1,801 stocks rose, 1,057 fell, and 117 remained unchanged on the BSE.

GIFT Nifty Trades Above 24,100

The August futures contract of the GIFT Nifty traded 0.21% higher at 24,190.00 as of 7:04 a.m.

The markets in Japan fell on Thursday as investors reviewed trade data. The Nikkei 225 dropped 612.81 points, or 1.75%, to 34,476.81 as of 06:27 a.m.

Other benchmarks in the Asia-Pacific region were also trading lower, following overnight losses on Wall Street. Traders awaited the Reserve Bank of India's interest rate decision. The Kospi and the S&P ASX 200 were down 1.43% and 0.61%, respectively, as of 06:29 a.m.

The S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 rose 0.77% and 1.05%, respectively, on Wednesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average increased by 0.60%.

Brent crude was trading 0.14% higher at $78.44 a barrel. Gold rose 0.21% to $2,387.89 an ounce.

The Indian benchmark stock indices ended a three-day losing streak on Wednesday. HDFC Bank Ltd. and Infosys Ltd. led the gains.

The NSE Nifty 50 closed 322.70 points, or 1.34%, higher at 24,315.25. The S&P BSE Sensex ended up 874.94 points, or 1.11%, at 79,468.01.

Foreign portfolio investors remained net sellers for the fourth consecutive session on Wednesday, offloading equities worth Rs 3,314.8 crore. Domestic investors were net buyers for the fourth consecutive session, purchasing equities worth Rs 3,801.2 crore, according to provisional data from the National Stock Exchange.

The Indian currency closed flat at 83.95 against the US dollar.
