The ongoing 2024 Lok Sabha elections in India are the only stable and consistent political event this year from a global perspective, even as the world is gripped with geopolitical tensions in Eastern Europe and the Middle East and the rocky US presidential contest, according to American political scientist Ian Bremmer.

"The only thing that looks stable and consistent politically is the India elections; everything else is problematic," Bremmer, founder and president of political risk research and consulting firm Eurasia Group, told NDTV Profit in an interview.

The organisation is predicting a repeat of the 2019 general election landslide for the BJP—a win of around 305 seats this time, he said. "Modi is almost certainly going to be in power for another term, on the back of pretty strong economic performance and consistency," he said.

As compared with Americans' lack of faith in their election system, Bremmer said India—the world's largest democracy—will have the smoothest transition of power. "There is not a lot of uncertainty regarding the legitimacy of the elections."

On the other hand, the US is a democracy in crisis, where people don't have faith that their elections are free and fair, he said.

India's Place In The World

The world has seen India underperform for decades despite its advantages of having an incredible demographic weight and a very strong intellectual capital, Bremmer said. "Now, we see economic growth picking up to become the third largest by 2028."

As India becomes more powerful, it will seek to define itself as a bridge among nations and as a leader of the Global South, he said. "India is not just seen as a positive story; it is also not seen as a threat to the global system."
