Despite the Corona virus pandemic, Indian Railways recorded more than 10 per cent increase in its freight loading in 2020-21, as compared to the corresponding fiscal of 2019-20, which was a normal year.
Indian Railways total loading was 203.88 million tonnes in 2020-21 which was 10 per cent more than 184.8 million tonnes of 2019-20.
On mission mode, Indian Railways' freight loading for the month of May 2021 is 92.29 million tonnes, which is 10 per cent more than of May 2019 (83.84 million tonnes) and 43 per cent more than May 2020 (64.61 million tonnes).
The important items transported during May 2021 include 97.06 million tonnes of coal, 27.14 million tonnes of iron ore, 7.89 million tonnes of food grains, 5.34 million tonnes of fertilisers, 6.09 million tonnes of mineral oil, 11.11 million tonnes of cement (excluding clinker) and 8.2 million tonnes of clinker.
In the month of May 2021, Indian Railways earned Rs 9,278.95 crores from freight loading.
