Honda Motorcycle & Scooters India will launch the electric version of the Honda Activa in March 2025, said Chief Executive Officer Tsutsumu Otani.
Activa has been India’s best-selling scooter for nearly two decades, Otani told NDTV Profit on Tuesday. The company has delayed the launch of an electric scooter for at least a year, he said.
Activa, first launched in 2001, has consolidated Honda's position in the Indian scooter market. In the quarter ended June 2024, the company increased its share in the market segment to 48% from 45% last year.
Honda, which currently offers Activa in 110cc and 125cc variants, sold 7.94 lakh scooters in the June quarter compared to 5.89 lakh units in the year-ago period, as per the data released by Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers.
The company's nearest rival, TVS Motor Company, sold 3.86 lakh units during the quarter.
In the electric scooters segment, Ola Electric, TVS Motor Company, Bajaj Auto, and Ather Energy are the top four companies in terms of market share.
Ola Electric's share in the segment had peaked to 52% in April 2024, but has decelerated since then. The Bhavish Agrawal-led company's sales dwindled 34% month-on-month to 88,472 e-scooters in August, as per the data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers (FADA). The slump lowered the EV maker's market share to 32%.
Meanwhile, TVS Motor and Bajaj Auto hold a market share of 19% each, whereas Ather Energy's share stands at around 12%.
