Byju's aggressive pandemic-era expansion started weighing down its business from the very next year as the bets didn't pay off the way it had expected.
Parent Think & Learn Pvt. posted a consolidated revenue from operations of Rs 5,015 crore in FY22, according to numbers shared with NDTV Profit by people familiar with the matter. While revenue rose from FY21's Rs 2,280.2 crore, it missed the company's own guidance of Rs 10,000 crore.
Its loss swelled to Rs 8,245 crore from Rs 4,564 crore.
The numbers show that a string of acquisitions in FY21, a period of lockdowns when students went online, did not yield result. That's also when its troubles began, ultimately leading to a fracas with lenders and delaying its earnings.
The company hasn't commented on its consolidated numbers formally. Byju's is set to approve FY22 numbers in an AGM on Wednesday, according a company notice.
Earlier in November, the edtech company reported an Ebitda loss of Rs 2,253 crore for its standalone business even as revenue grew to Rs 3,569 crore for FY22.
Once valued at $22 billion, Byju's has seen a rapid decline over the past 15 months, with long-time backer Prosus cutting its valuation to below $3 billion.
It faces multiple legal battles, alongside a tricky path to profitability, ineffectual integration of its various acquisitions and poor corporate governance.
