The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has instructed top lenders in the country to offer a certain number of free ATM transactions (including both financial and non-financial) in a month, irrespective of the location of ATMs. However, customers are charged for transactions at ATMs over and above these mandated number of free transactions, central bank said on its official website- rbi.org.in. Major banks, from state-run SBI to private sector lenders ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank, have certain rules applicable to their customers for making transactions at ATMs.
The ATM charges apply depending on the type - whether it belongs to the same bank where the customer's account is located or some other bank - and nature of ATM - whether the ATM is located in a metropolitan or any other city in the country.
