Air India will launch premium economy class on select domestic routes from July 1, the company announced on Wednesday. The Tata Group-owned airline has refitted two new A320neo aircraft in a three-class configuration.
The premium economy class will have spacious legroom with four-way headrest. Portable electronic device holders and USB ports to charge mobile phones, laptops and other gadgets are among a few new features, according to a release.
"We're turning a new page in our transformation with our first 2 refitted A320neo aircraft in a three-class configuration. Enjoy the luxury of Business class (8 seats), the all-new Premium Economy (24 seats), and the comfort of Economy (132 seats) on our select domestic and short-haul international flights," Air India posted on X.
All seats in the flight are equipped with literature pockets, charging ports, tray table and coat hooks, the company said in a statement on Wednesday.
"The introduction of a three-class cabin to Air India's narrowbody fleet and commencement of interior refits are important steps in the journey of enhancing the flying experience," Campbell Wilson, chief executive officer of Air India, said.
This is the first time the airline has introduced premium economy cabins on its narrow-body aircraft. As of now, Vistara is the only Indian carrier which offers premium economy-class travel category on its domestic routes.
Air India has plans to introduce the three-class configuration to its entire full service narrowbody fleet over the next year. Existing aircraft are also being progressively inducted for refit.
