Online food guide TasteAtlas recently unveiled its lists of the top 10 best and worst-rated Indian dishes, creating a stir among several Indians.

The best-rated list includes popular favourites like mango lassi and butter chicken, while the worst-rated list surprisingly features jaljeera, a summer staple loaded with the goodness of cumin.

Mango lassi, a sweet and refreshing yogurt-based drink from Punjab, was given a stellar rating of 4.6. Close on its heels were chai masala, and butter garlic naan, both also boasting a 4.6 rating.

Other well-loved dishes that made the top 10 include:

  • Amritsari Kulcha (4.6): A stuffed bread from Amritsar.

  • Butter Chicken (4.5): A creamy chicken curry from Delhi.

  • Hyderabadi Biryani (4.5): A flavourful rice dish from Hyderabad.

  • Shahi Paneer (4.5): A rich paneer curry from Punjab.

  • Chole Bhature (4.5): Spicy chickpeas with fried bread from Delhi.

  • Tandoori Chicken (4.4): A marinated chicken dish from Punjab.

  • Korma (4.4): A creamy and spiced curry.

However, the worst-rated list has not gone down well with many Indians. Jaljeera, typically appreciated for its cooling and digestive properties, tops this list with a surprisingly low rating of 2.7. Other entries on the list include:

  • Gajak (2.8): A sweet treat from Northern India.

  • Thengai Sadam (3.0): Coconut rice from Southern India.

  • Panta Bhat (3.0): Fermented rice from North-Eastern India.

  • Aloo Baingan (3.0): A potato and eggplant curry from Punjab.

  • Thandai (3.0): A spiced milk drink from Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh.

  • Achappam (3.2): A deep-fried snack from Kerala.

  • Mirchi Ka Salan (3.2): A spicy chili curry from Hyderabad.

  • Malpua (3.2): A sweet pancake.

  • Upma (3.2): A semolina porridge from Tamil Nadu.

The rankings have sparked disbelief and left many piqued. Social media was peppered with comments such as: "Bruh India has one of the richest culinary histories and arguably the most culinary diversity out of every country in the world and you chose Mango Lassi as #1? This is like cappuccino being the #1 food of Italy. Stick to European foods ya’ll have no idea what you’re talking about when it comes to Asia."

Another comment read, "Unfortunately this list is negligence max. All of our heirloom recipes are on that worst list. Indian culture celebrates seasonal produce. Gajak, Panta Baat are all examples of this. And it fell into the worst list. This is what happens when the world wants to think they know everything about India."

And a third user adds, "Malpua, Thandai, Jal jeera.... How they are the worst-rated food items??"
