The seventh month of the Gregorian calendar, 'July', is named in honour of Roman general and politician, Julius Caesar, after his demise in 44 BC since July was his birth month.

The month packs in several important days like World Youth Skills Day, World Chess Day, and International Day of Friendship, among others.

This month holds spiritual significance for Hindus as the auspicious month of 'Shravan' begins on July 22 and 'Rath Yatra' will commence on July 7.

Shravan is dedicated to lord Shiva whose devotees fast, visit different temples, and perform pujas throughout the month.

The Jagannath Rath Yatra is one of the oldest Hindu chariot festivals held in Puri, Odisha. Three chariots for lord Jagannath (believed to be a form of lord Krishna), his sister Subhadra and brother Balram are taken out with great pomp and splendour.

Devotees who participate in this journey chant mantras and play drums during the journey. It is believed that all sins of these devotees are forgiven and they begin a new life.

Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated to mark India's victory against Pakistan in the Kargil War of July 1999. This day is observed to honour the sacrifice and bravery of the 527 martyrs and other Indian soldiers. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Kargil War.
