Popular messaging app WhatsApp has introduced several updates that will make calling on the platform across devices "even bigger and better". These updates will be available over the next few weeks.

New WhatsApp Features For Better Calls

  1. Screen Sharing with Audio: Users can now share both their screen and audio during calls. This is perfect for watching videos together with friends and family.

  2. More Participants in Video Calls: The number of participants in a video call has been increased to 32. This feature is available across all devices, making it easier to connect with more people at once.

  3. Speaker Spotlight: When in a large video call, it can be challenging to see who is talking. The new speaker spotlight feature will automatically highlight and bring the speaker to the forefront, making it easier to follow the conversation.

Improved Call Quality with MLow Codec

WhatsApp is also focusing on improving audio and video quality. The recently launched MLow codec enhances call reliability by providing clearer audio and better noise and echo cancellation. This improvement is particularly beneficial for calls made on mobile devices, making them crisper even in noisy environments or with poor network connectivity. For those with faster connections, video calls will now have higher resolution.

"We'll continue making improvements to calling on WhatsApp so you can make the best quality, private calls wherever you are in the world," the company added.

Last week, WhatsApp rolled out new features for businesses at its annual conference in Brazil. These updates aim to help businesses connect more effectively with customers and streamline their operations. New AI tools will assist businesses in responding quickly to common questions and creating ads for Facebook and Instagram. Additionally, the Meta Verified badge for businesses will enhance account support and protection against impersonation. A one-tap calling feature for larger businesses is also being introduced to handle complex customer requests more efficiently.
