Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport has expanded its digital gateway programme to enhance the travel experience for both DigiYatra and non-DigiYatra passengers.

CSMIA has curated dedicated DigiYatra zones across all its gates, with 34 entry lanes for use by DigiYatra passengers. The airport has also increased terminal entry points (eGates) from 24 to 68—the highest number of e-gates at kerbside or landslide in the country—without any structural modifications, according to a press release.

The expansion will enhance the airport’s processing capacity to around 7,440 passengers per hour at Terminal 2 and 2,160 at Terminal 1, which is a 3X addition to the current capacity. The Digital Gateway is also expected to reduce the wait times to under one minute at the kerbside, the release said.

The airport’s Digital Gateway combines the benefits of technology, big data analytics and design thinking to deliver enhanced passenger experience. The Digital Gateway at T2 now has 28 DigiYatra e-gates alongside 28 non-DigiYatra e-gates. T1 features six DigiYatra e-gates and six non-DigiYatra ones, helping enhance the airport's overall capacity and passenger experience.

According to the release, an additional 118 e-gates are being deployed at the Pre-embarkation Security Check area at T2 to simplify passenger movement. With biometric validation, DigiYatra passengers can pass the e-gates without needing to show their ticket, boarding pass or identity verification. The solution leverages various Internet of Things sensors and biometric face pods integrated with the DigiYatra foundation to identify and guide passengers.

"By increasing the number of eGates and integrating advanced biometric systems, we are committed to ensuring swift, secure and seamless travel for all our passengers. Our focus remains on enhancing efficiency and convenience,” said a CSMIA spokesperson.

To assist first-time DigiYatra passengers, "Digi Buddies" have been deployed to guide passengers in using various self-service systems. CSMIA will also deploy artificial intelligence and machine learning-enabled cameras to enhance the security system at the kerbside, the release said.

In response to the increasing passenger traffic demand and forecasted growth, the airport is focusing on real-time information sharing and improved decision-making processes. CSMIA’s digital platform, coupled with digital screens running dynamic content, broadcasts necessary information, helping passengers benefit from a technologically advanced travel experience.
