What is Super 8 in T20 World Cup?

The second phase of the 2024 T20 World Cup will see the top two teams from each group progress to the next round, known as the Super 8. The Super 8 round will begin on Wednesday, June 19 and end on Tuesday, June 25.

Which teams have qualified for Super 8?

India, England, Australia, Afghanistan, West Indies, USA, South Africa and Bangladesh have qualified for the Super 8 stage of the 2024 T20 World Cup.

England's Super 8 qualification was confirmed after their win against Namibia and Scotlands subsequent loss against Australia on June 16.

Bangladesh was the last team to qualify after their 21-run victory over Nepal in match 37 of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

Super 8 Groups

The Super 8 stage is divided into two groups, Group 1 and Group 2. Each group will have four teams qualified from the initial group stage.

  • Group 1 will comprise teams that finished first in Groups A and C, and second in Groups B and D.

  • Group 2 will include the table-toppers from Groups B and D and second-placed teams from Groups A and C.

T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 Seeding Explained

For the very first time, the International Cricket Council (ICC) introduced the concept of pre-tournament seedings at the 2024 T20 World Cup, meaning that ICC has decided the fixtures in advance, reducing the influence of first-round standings.

ICC's Pre-tournament seedings is given below.

ICC had pre-seeded the top eight teams as per the T20I rankings: India (A1), Pakistan (A2), England (B1), Australia (B2), New Zealand (C1), West Indies (C2), South Africa (D1) and Sri Lanka (D2) were the allotted seedings.

Irrespective of where these teams finish in the group table, the seeding will be retained for the Super 8 round which will determine the fixtures for this stage. Also if one of the pre-seeded teams is eliminated from the competition, then the unseeded team that replaced them will take over their seeding and the spot in the Super 8 group.

For example: Australia topped Group B and England finished second, but England will still proceed as B1 and Australia as B2.

Same with Group C; New Zealand were allotted C1 and West Indies C2. Even if West Indies beat Afghanistan in their final game of the group stage they will retain C2 seeding and Afghanistan will be allotted C1 seeding.

Super 8 Format

There are two groups (Group 1 and Group 2) of four teams in the Super Eight stage, meaning each team will play three matches against their opponents in the same group.

The two top teams from each group in the Super 8 stage will qualify for the semi-finals, which will be held in Trinidad and Tobago & Guyana on June 26 and 27 respectively. The final will be held in Barbados on Saturday, June 29. ICC has also scheduled reserve days for both the semi-finals and the final.
