India will face arch-rivals Pakistan in their second ICC Men's T20 World World Cup 2024 match. The Rohit Sharma-led team beat Ireland by eight wickets in their opening Group A match of the T20 World Cup on Wednesday.

Sharma top-scored with a 37-ball 52 before he retired hurt while wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant chipped in with 36 not out off 26 balls as India chased down the target of 97 with 46 balls to spare.

Earlier, India's pace quartet, led by Hardik Pandya, produced a dominant effort on a spicy pitch to bowl out Ireland for 96.

Pandya (3/27) led India’s effort with the ball and he received able support from Arshdeep Singh (2/35) and Jasprit Bumrah (2/6) after skipper Rohit elected to bowl first in their tournament opener.

Meanwhile, Pakistan suffered a shocking defeat in their tournament opener against newcomers USA on Thursday. The result was reminiscent of Pakistan's three-wicket loss to Ireland in the 2007 ODI World Cup in the West Indies, which knocked them out of that tournament.

Opting to field, left-arm spinner Nosthush Kenjige scalped three wickets for 30 runs as Pakistan found it difficult to press the accelerator and were restricted to 159 for seven.

While chasing, USA ended on the same score, reaching 159 for 3 with skipper Monank Patel (50 off 38), Aaron Jones (36 not out of 26) and Andries Gous (35 off 26) leading from the front.

In the Super Over bowled by Mohammad Amir, USA piled up 18 runs, eight of which came from extras. Saurabh Netravalkar then kept his cool and bowled brilliantly to give away just 13 runs for a famous win.

The much-awaited match between India and Pakistan will be played on June 9. The match is scheduled to start at 8 PM IST.

New York's Nassau County International Cricket Stadium is the venue for Sunday's India vs Pakistan match.

The Nassau County ground's track, which is 'bordering on dangerous with huge open cracks', has become a concern in the ongoing T20 World Cup and the ICC on Thursday conceded that the tracks used so far "have not played as consistently as we would have all wanted".

"T20 Inc and the ICC recognise that the pitches used so far at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium have not played as consistently as we would have all wanted," the ICC said in a statement.

"The world-class grounds team have been working hard since the conclusion of yesterday’s game to remedy the situation and deliver the best possible surfaces for the remaining matches," it added.
