Here's How India Fared At The Previous Nine ICC T20 World Cups

The ninth edition of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup kicked off on June 1 when host USA took on Canada at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas.

The Rohit Sharma-led team is entering the tournament as one of the favourites and will look to end India's trophy drought in the ICC events.

Under the leadership of MS Dhoni, India won the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007 but has failed to lift the trophy since then. India has played 44 matches in the tournament and has won 27 of those with a win percentage of 61.36.

A young Indian team led by 'Captain Cool' Dhoni defeated Pakistan in the final of the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup by five runs. Irfan Pathan was adjudged the 'Player of the match' for his spell of 3/16 in 4 overs in the final.

Defending champions India started well by defeating Bangladesh and Ireland in the group stages. They were knocked out of the tournament after they lost three consecutive matches against England, West Indies and South Africa in the Super 8 stage. Pakistan won the tournament by defeating Sri Lanka in the final match at Lord's.

Once again, India began their campaign impressively by winning both their matches in the 2010 ICC World Twenty20 group stage. They did not qualify for the semi-finals for the second time in a row as they lost all three of their matches in the Super 8s. India lost to Australia by 49 runs, against hosts West Indies by 18 runs and to Sri Lanka by five wickets.

England went on to lift their maiden T20 World Cup title by defeating arch-rivals Australia in the finals by seven wickets.

In the 2012 edition of the T20 World Cup held in Sri Lanka, India defeated England and Afghanistan in the group stages. In the Super 8s, they lost to Australia and defeated Pakistan and South Africa. However, the MS Dhoni-led team could not qualify for the semis due to a poor Net Run Rate.

In the fifth edition of the T20 World Cup, India defeated West Indies, Pakistan, Australia and Bangladesh in the group stages. In the second semi-final, a Virat Kohli masterclass helped India defeat South Africa by six wickets. India suffered a heartbreaking loss in the final as Sri Lanka chased down 131 runs inside 18 overs. Virat Kohli was adjudged the 'Player of the series' for scoring 319 runs in six innings.

India hosted the T20 World Cup for the first time in 2016. The 'Men in Blue' lost their opening game against New Zealand by 47 runs but bounced back strongly by winning their next three matches and qualifying for the semis.

In the semi-final match, the West Indies, who eventually went on to win the tournament, defeated India by seven wickets at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Virat Kohli was India's leading run-getter and won his second successive 'Player of the tournament' award.

The 2021 edition of the T20 World Cup was shifted from India to the UAE due to the COVID-19 situation in the country. India failed to qualify for the knockouts after losing to Pakistan and New Zealand in the group stages.

Australia finally managed to become T20 world champions in the seventh edition of the tournament after defeating New Zealand by eight wickets in the final.
