The water stock in the lakes supplying drinking water to Mumbai stood at 8.59%, slightly above the previous day's level of 8.24%, according to the data shared by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation on Thursday.

The collective water stock in the seven reservoirs is now at 1,24,343 million litres till 6:00 a.m. on July 4. On this day in 2023, the useful water stock was 17.66% (equivalent to 2,55,622 million litres) and 13.36% (equivalent to 1,93,309 million litres) in 2022.

The drop in water levels as compared to previous years can be attributed to the below-average rainfall seen in June. The city is yet to witness heavy rainfall in July, with Mumbai and its neighbouring cities having so far witnessed short spells of moderate to heavy rains in isolated places. This has led to a snail's pace growth of water stock in these seven reservoirs.

The seven reservoirs that supply water to Mumbai are Bhatsa, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Tansa, Modak Sagar, Vihar and Tulsi - located in Mumbai, Thane and Nashik districts.

As per the latest BMC data, the water level in Tansa is at 19.87%. Modak Sagar is at 24.45%. The useful water stock in Middle Vaitarna is at 14.99% while Tulsi Lake is at 29.10% of its full capacity.

As per the release, from the gross useful contents of Bhatsa, 5,75,700 million litres are allocated for MCGM usage. In addition, the Maharashtra government has sanctioned 1,37,000 million litres of water for Mumbai from Bhatsa and 91,130 million litres of water from the Upper Vaitarna dam for this season. Uppar Vaitarna Lake level is below LDL hence useful contents of this lake are considered as zero, useful contents used below LDL is 25,899 million litres.
