Southwest Monsoon Advances Further; IMD Issues Orange Alert And Heatwave Warnings For THESE States

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday that the southwest monsoon had advanced into some parts of the central Arabian Sea, some more parts of Karnataka, Rayalaseema, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, some parts of Telangana and some more parts of Westcentral and Northwest Bay of Bengal on June 3.

Earlier, the IMD had confirmed that the Southwest Monsoon reached Kerala and progressed into parts of northeast India on Thursday, May 30.

"Conditions are favourable for further advance of Southwest Monsoon into remaining parts of central Arabian Sea, remaining parts of Karnataka, some parts of south Maharashtra, Goa, remaining parts Rayalaseema, Telangana & Coastal Andhra Pradesh, some parts of south Chhattisgarh and south Odisha, some more parts of Westcentral and Northwest Bay of Bengal during next 4-5 days," said IMD in its latest monsoon bulletin on Monday.

Monsoon typically settles over Kerala by June 1 and over Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Manipur, and Assam by June 5. On May 15, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had forecasted the monsoon's arrival in southern India on May 31.

India is likely to see 'above normal' rainfall during the monsoon season between June and September 2024, the IMD said, reaffirming its previous forecast. The southwest monsoon seasonal rainfall over the country as a whole is likely to be 106% of the long-period average with a model error of ± 4%, the IMD stated in a press release.

The country will most likely see normal rainfall between 92 and 108% of LPA during June 2024. The month will also see above-normal monthly maximum temperatures over most parts of the country, except many parts of southern peninsular India, where normal to below-normal temperatures are most likely.

IMD issues orange alerts for THESE states

In association with the approaching Western Disturbance, rainfall/thunderstorms at a few places over the plains of Northwest India from June 5 to 7.

IMD has issued an orange alert for the following states predicting isolated heavy (64.5-115.5 mm) to very heavy rainfall (115.5-204.4 mm) on June 3.

  • Kerala & Mahe

  • Coastal Andhra Pradesh

  • Yanam

  • Assam

  • Meghalaya

Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely over Assam & Meghalaya from June 3 to June 5 with heavy rainfall on June 6 & 7. Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim from June 3 to June 6, over Arunachal Pradesh on June 3 & 4 and over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura on June 5 & 6.

IMD issues Heatwave warning for THESE states

Heatwave conditions with reduced intensity are likely in isolated pockets over parts of northwest & east India during the next 4-5 days, said IMD in its latest weather forecast.

Heatwave conditions are very likely in a few parts of Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi and isolated pockets of Jammu division, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, West Rajasthan and East Madhya Pradesh, on June 3, 2024.

Heatwave conditions are also likely in isolated pockets of Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh on June 3; in Odisha on June 4 & 5; in Jharkhand from June 4 to 7; in Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi on June 5 and in Bihar on June 6 & 7.

Hot and humid weather is very likely to prevail over isolated pockets of Odisha till June 7; over Bihar till June 5; over Konkan & Goa till June 3; and over Gangetic West Bengal on June 6 & 7.
