Modi Cabinet 3.0: Top BJP Leaders Retain Roles; Shivraj Gets Agriculture, Railways With Vaishnaw

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Cabinet in his historic third term will hold on to the known faces in the big four ministries—Amit Shah will retain the Home Ministry portfolio, Rajnath Singh Defence, Foreign Ministry will be with S Jaishankar and the Finance ministry with Nirmala Sitharaman. 

Nitin Gadkari (Road Transport and Highways), Piyush Goyal (Commerce and Industry) and Ashwini Vaishnaw (Railways) will remain in-charge of their previous ministries.

The Civil Aviation Ministry has changed hands from Jyotiraditya Scindia to TDP's Ram Mohan Naidu, the youngest minister in the Cabinet. Scindia has been put in charge of the Telecom Ministry.

Two former Chief Ministers from the key BJP states of Haryana and Madhya Pradesh, who have been brought to the Centre, have been allocated significant responsibility. Manohar Lal Khattar will handle two key ministries—Power and Housing, and Urban Affairs.

Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the four-time Madhya Pradesh CM, will handle the key Ministry of Agriculture, and the related Farmers Welfare and Rural Development ministries.

South ally and Janata Dal Secular Chief HD Kumaraswamy has been put in charge of the Heavy Industries and Steel portfolios.

Key Bihar ally and LJP chief Chirag Paswan has been given charge of the Food Processing Department.

JP Nadda, the health minister in PM Modi's first Cabinet, has been brought back with the same portfolio.

He has also been given additional charge of the Chemicals and Fertilisers department.

PM Modi called up former President Pratibha Patil, former Prime Ministers Manmohan Singh and Deve Gowda to solicit their blessings as he begins his third term.

The Cabinet Committee on Security is a cabinet committee that discusses, debates and is the final decision-making body on senior appointments in the national security apparatus, defence policy and expenditure, and generally all matters of India's national security.

The CCS includes the Prime Minister, Defence Minister, Finance Minister, Home Minister and External Affairs Minister. The National Security Adviser, the Cabinet Secretary and the Defence Secretary have also been attendees of the CCS meetings.

The Union Cabinet meeting on Monday has decided to provide assistance to 3 crore additional rural and urban households for the construction of houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), to meet the housing requirements arising out of the increase in the number of eligible families.

The centrally-sponsored scheme was introduced in 2015 to provide assistance to the eligible rural and urban households for construction of houses with basic amenities. Under PMAY, total total 4.21 crore houses have been completed for the eligible poor families under the housing schemes in the last 10 years.

The media briefing on Monday's Union Cabinet meeting could be conducted at a short notice, NDTV reported.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held the first meeting of his new Cabinet on Monday evening. The newly-inducted ministers arrived at the prime minister's 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, residence around 5:00 p.m. and attended the meeting, a day after taking oath. The meeting was held even as PM Modi is yet to announce the portfolios of the new ministers.

The Constitution provides the Central government with wide-ranging executive powers in various domains of governance. The Union Cabinet has ministers leading various departments, with defined roles.

The ministries of Home Affairs, External Affairs, Defence and Finance, are the most important portfolios. They, along with the PM, constitute the Cabinet Committee on Security.

PM Modi is set to distribute cabinet portfolios to 30 ministers who took oath on Sunday.

As per the Constitution, the Speaker's position becomes empty right before the new Lok Sabha convenes for the initial session. A temporary Speaker designated by the President oversees the swearing-in of the new MPs. Later, a Lok Sabha Speaker is chosen through a basic majority vote.

While there is no specific criteria to be elected as a Lok Sabha Speaker, an understanding of the Constitution and parliamentary rules is an advantage. In the last two Lok Sabhas, in which the BJP enjoyed a majority, Sumitra Mahajan and Om Birla were the Speakers.

N Chandrababu Naidu and Nitish Kumar are political veterans and want the Speaker's post as an 'insurance'. Over the past couple of years, there have been multiple cases of mutiny within ruling parties that have led to splits and even toppled governments. In such cases, the anti-defection law comes into play, and this law gives a very powerful position to the Speaker of the House.

PM Narendra Modi responded to his Pakistan counterpart Shehbaz Sharif's felicitation on being sworn-in as PM.

"Thank you @cmshehbaz for your good wishes," Modi said on X.

The Pakistan leader was not invited in the swearing-in ceremony of Modi on Sunday, even as leaders of all other South Asian countries attented.

The first cabinet meeting of the third NDA government is underway with the portfolio of ministers to be revealed shortly, NDTV reported.  

Sikkim Krantikari Morcha chief Prem Singh Tamang (PS Golay) took oath as chief minister of Sikkim for the second consecutive term on Monday. The ruling party secured a resounding victory in the state, winning 31 out of 32 seats in the assembly elections held last month.

PM Modi congratulated Tamang in a post on X.

"Government means new energy of strength, dedication and resolve. For our team, there are no time constraints, no limits to thinking and no set standards for effort. I invite all those who are willing to dedicate themselves to realising the resolve of a developed India."

In his first address to the officials of PMO, after assuming office of the Prime Minister for the third time, PM Modi said, "Ten years ago, there was an impression that PMO is the centre of power. This is not my intention nor my path. We tried to develop a catalytic agent in the PMO since 2014 that can infuse new energy. My wish is to make it the 'people's PMO', not 'Modi's PMO'."

Sikkim Krantikari Morcha convenor Prem Singh Tamang is set to take oath as the Chief Minister for a second consecutive term on Monday, at the Paljor stadium in Gangtok. Governor Lakshman Acharya will administer the oath of office. The swearing-in ceremony will commence at 4 p.m. and will likely be attended by around 30,000 people, said officials.

The SKM won 31 of the 32 assembly seats in the polls, which took place simultaneously with the Lok Sabha elections. Tamang won from both Rhenock and Soreng-Chakung constituencies that he contested.

PM Modi is set to attend Union Minister N Chandrababu Naidu's swearing in ceremony as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. The ceremony will take place on June 12 at 11:00 a.m.

He will later attend the swearing in of the new Chief Minister of Orissa on June 12 at 4:45 p.m.

Opposition leaders criticised Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Monday for their minimal representation in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's new Union ministry. Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackearay faction) spokesperson Sanjay Raut remarked that the "minuscule" inclusion of their parties in the cabinet demonstrated that "the BJP has shown them their place." Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar warned that if the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party declines the MoS post, they should not expect any future cabinet positions. Baramati Lok Sabha member Supriya Sule expressed no surprise over the Ajit Pawar-led NCP's exclusion from the cabinet.

Prime Minister Modi thanked his Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau for the latter's congratulatory tweet on his third term. He expressed an interest in working with Canada based on mutual understanding.

Ties between India and Canada have been stressed in the recent past. Tensions escalated after the Canadian Prime Minister's comment alleging India’s involvement in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

BJP MP Suresh Gopi refuted rumors of his possible resignation from the Modi Government's Council of Ministers, labeling them as "grossly incorrect." He reaffirmed his commitment to Kerala's development and prosperity under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership.

Amit Shah won the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha seat in Gujarat by defeating his nearest Congress rival Sonal Patel by a margin of more than 7.44 lakh votes. His electoral prowess extends beyond strategising, with over 180 public meetings and road shows held across the country after the announcement of the Lok Sabha poll schedule by the Election Commission.

Throughout his career, Shah has held various key positions, including national treasurer of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha in 1997 and multiple terms as an MLA from Gujarat. His tenure as Gujarat's home minister saw him managing an extensive portfolio of 12 crucial departments.

Shah made history by becoming the youngest president of the Bharatiya Janata Party at 49 in 2014, later assuming office as one of the youngest Union Home Ministers at 54 in 2019.

Modi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh are among master's degree holders. Others in the postgraduate group include Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Nirmala Sitharaman, S. Jaishankar, Dharmendra Pradhan, Dr Virendra Kumar, Mansukh Mandviya, Hardeep Singh Puri, Annapurna Devi, and Gajendra Singh Shekhawat. The six ministers with law degrees are Nitin Gadkari, JP Nadda, Piyush Goyal, Sarbananda Sonowal, Bhupender Yadav, and Kiren Rijiju.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated PM Modi on being reelected as the Prime Minister of India, in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with various world leaders including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe of Sri Lanka, President Mohammed Muizzu of Maldives and Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth of Mauritius among others on Monday.

Union Minister S Jaishankar met Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina ahead of Modi 3.0 portfolio allocations.

The new Parliament session may begin on June 18, NDTV reported quoting sources. MPs are expected to be sworn in over the course of three days, with the election of the Lok Sabha Speaker likely to take place on June 20, sources told NDTV, adding that the President's address is anticipated to be held on June 21.

Meanwhile, S Jaishankar, who was formerly in charge of the Ministry of External Affairs under Modi 2.0, and has now been inducted into Modi 3.0, met Mohamed Muizzu, the President of Maldives.

Sitharaman, who has held the finance portfolio since 2019, has been a key figure in the government's economic strategy, particularly through the challenging periods of the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath.

She first entered the Union cabinet in 2014, later becoming the country's first full-time female Defence Minister in 2017. Her tenure as Defence Minister was marked by significant decisions, including the procurement of critical defense equipment and the Balakot Air Strike.

In 2019, Sitharaman was appointed as the Finance Minister. Her budgets have focused on infrastructure development, digital economy, and social welfare schemes, aiming to foster inclusive growth.

PM Modi signed his first file authorising the release of the 17th installment of PM Kisan Nidhi after being sworn in as Prime Minister for the third time. This will benefits 9.3 crore farmers and distribute around Rs 20,000 crores, as per a press release.

"Ours is a Government fully committed to Kisan Kalyan. It is therefore fitting that the first file signed on taking charge is related to farmer welfare. We want to keep working even more for the farmers and the agriculture sector in the times to come," said PM Modi.

Nitin Gadkari, a 67-year-old leader from Nagpur, Maharashtra, has been the longest-serving Minister for Road Transport & Highways, holding the portfolio in the last two governments led by Narendra Modi.

Gadkari is credited with constructing over 90,000 km of national highways and 30,000 km of new roads in the last decade.

Having served as a member of the Maharashtra legislative council from the Nagpur Graduates' constituency from 1989 to 2014, Gadkari became a state minister in 1995, overseeing the Public Works Department.

Under his tenure, significant infrastructure projects like the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, 54 flyovers in Mumbai, and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link were conceived and executed.

Nepal PM Pushpa Kamal Dahal arrives at Rashtrapati Bhavan in Delhi. He had arrived in India ahead of PM Modi's swearing in ceremony on Sunday.

The Modi 3.0 cabinet in their pilot meeting on Monday may allocate around two crore houses to the needy in a housing scheme, as per NDTV India sources.

Shivraj Singh Chouhan, former chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, was sworn in as a member of the National Democratic Alliance cabinet on Sunday. He had won Madhya Pradesh's Vidisha Lok Sabha seat for the sixth time by a record margin of 8.21 lakh votes.

Chouhan's elevation to Union Cabinet Minister marks his first such role in his over three-decade-long political career. He has been a four-time Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh. Chouhan campaigned extensively, leading the BJP to win all 29 seats in Madhya Pradesh, including the Congress stronghold of Chhindwara.

Thirty-three first-timers have found place in the third Modi government sworn in on Sunday and at least six of them hail from well-known political families.

Those joining Prime Minister Narendra Modi's council of ministers for the first time include three former chief ministers -- Shivraj Singh Chouhan (Madhya Pradesh), Manohar Lal Khattar (Haryana) and HD Kumaraswamy (Karnataka).

Seven first-time ministers in the Modi government belong to the allies: TDP's K Rammohan Naidu and Chandrasekhar Pemmasani; JDU's Lalan Singh and Ram Nath Thakur, RLD's Jayant Chaudhary, LJP's Chirag Paswan and HD Kumaraswamy of the JD(S).

The Modi 3.0 cabinet is set to meet for the first time at the PM's residence at 5 p.m. today, as per NDTV sources.

Actor-turned-politician Suresh Gopi, the only BJP MP from Kerala, expressed hours before the allocation of portfolios of the new Modi 3.0 government that he wishes to be relieved of his post as Minister of State.

“I want to work as an MP. My stand was that I didn’t want it (Cabinet berth). I had told (the party) that I was not interested in it. I think I will be relieved soon,” he said to Malayalam channels in Delhi. “The people of Thrissur know very well. I will perform very well as an MP. I want to act in films. Let the party decide.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to take charge today at 11:30 a.m., as per NDTV sources. The newly appointed cabinet will request the President to summon the Parliament and address both houses. Portfolios for the new ministers are expected to be announced shortly.

In the latest reshuffle of Modi's Cabinet, seven women have been appointed. It is noteworthy that the last Cabinet had 11 women representatives.

Nirmala Sitharaman, a seasoned Rajya Sabha MP with prior roles in finance and defence, retains her cabinet position. Annpurna Devi, a two-time MP from Koderma, has been promoted from Minister of State for Education to a full cabinet minister. This cabinet also sees the notable exclusion of Smriti Irani, who held the Women and Children Ministry in the previous cabinet.

The other women sworn in as ministers yesterday are Anupriya Patel, Raksha Khadse, Savitri Thakur, Shobha Karandlaje and Nimuben Bambhaniya.

Ministeries are expected to be allocated to the newly sworn-in ministers of the third Modi government on Monday. The new Union Council of Ministers took oath of office and secrecy on Sunday.

Heavyweight portfolios like home, finance, defence and external affairs, along with education and culture are expected to be kept by the BJP. Allies can get anywhere between five to eight Cabinet berths.

While leaders like Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh are seen within the party as a certainty in the new Cabinet, former chief ministers who have won the Lok Sabha polls like Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Basavaraj Bommai, Manohar Lal Khattar and Sarbananda Sonowal are strong contenders for joining the government.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Union Council of Ministers was sworn in a gala ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Sunday. Along with Modi, senior BJP leaders Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari, and Amit Shah also took oath as cabinet ministers, while party president JP Nadda returned to the cabinet after five years.

The third Union Council of Ministers under Modi has 30 Cabinet ministers, five Ministers of State (Independent Charge) and 36 Ministers of State.
