IMD Weather Update: Heatwave Conditions Today, Thundershowers Expected This Week In Mumbai

Southwest Monsoon is very likely to advance into South Andaman Sea, some parts of Southeast Bay of Bengal and Nicobar Islands around May 19.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave warning for Mumbai, Thane and Raigad. The weather bureau also said that there is a possibility of hailstorm activity and thunderstorms this week.

Mumbai Weather Update

A report in The Indian Express citing meteorologists said that the city might experience a hot and humid weather from Wednesday due to cloud formation.  This is also likely to push the humidity levels by 70 – 80%.

Here's the forecast from May 15 to May 20 by IMD:

  • May 15: Expect hot weather with the maximum temperature likely to reach 37 degrees Celsius. There is a heat wave warning in effect.

  • May 16: The maximum temperature will reach 35 degrees Celsius with a chance of rain or thunderstorms in the afternoon or evening.

  • May 17: The skies are expected to be clear.

  • May 18: Clear skies are expected with the maximum temperature limit of 33 degrees Celsius.

  • May 19: Mostly clear skies will prevail with a high of 33 degrees Celsius.

  • May 20: Another day of mostly clear skies with a high of 33 degrees Celsius.

The air quality in Mumbai is very unhealthy. IMD said that sensitive groups will immediately feel health effects and people should avoid outdoor activity. Healthy individuals are likely to experience difficulty breathing and throat irritation. They are advised to consider staying indoors and rescheduling outdoor activities.

Maximum Temperature In The Country

Here is the maximum temperature observation and forecast for the next 5 days:

  • Areas having maximum temperatures greater than 40°C: Yesterday, maximum temperatures were in the range of 40- 42°C in some parts of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat state & south Haryana and isolated pockets of East Uttar Pradesh, Rayalaseema & Vidarbha.

  • A gradual rise by about 3-5°C in maximum temperatures is likely over many parts of Northwest and East India during the next 5 days.

  • A gradual rise by about 2-4°C in maximum temperatures is very likely over many parts of Central India.

  • No significant change in maximum temperatures is expected over the rest parts of the country.

Heat Wave And Hot And Humid Weather In The Country

Here is the heatwave and hot and humid weather warning for the next 5 days:

  • Heat wave conditions are very likely in isolated/some pockets over Konkan on May 15 over West Rajasthan during May 15-18, over Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, south Haryana, Bihar during May 16-18 and north Madhya Pradesh, East Rajasthan on May 17 and 18.

  • Severe heat wave conditions are also very likely in some parts of West Rajasthan on May 17 and 18 and in isolated pockets of Punjab, south Haryana on May 18.

  • Hot and humid weather is very likely to prevail over Konkan and Goa on May 15, Saurashtra and Kutch on May 16-18 and Gangetic West Bengal on May 17 and 18.
