Water Level In Mumbai Lakes At 8.24% On July 3; City To See Moderate Rainfall For Next Few Days

The water stock in the lakes supplying drinking water to Mumbai is at 8.24%, according to the data shared by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation on Wednesday.

The collective water stock in the seven reservoirs is now at 1,19,231 million litres till 6:00 a.m. on July 3. On this day in 2023, the useful water stock was 16.78% and 12.92% in 2022.

The seven reservoirs that supply water to Mumbai are Bhatsa, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Tansa, Modak Sagar, Vihar and Tulsi - located in Mumbai, Thane and Nashik districts.

Mumbai needs around 4,000-4,500 million litres of water every day. The total capacity of these lakes is 14.47 lakh million litres.

As per the latest BMC data, the water level in Tansa is at 19.66%. Modak Sagar is at 24.45%. The useful water stock in Middle Vaitarna is at 14.83% while Tulsi Lake is at 29.24% of its full capacity.

As per the release, from the gross useful contents of Bhatsa, 5,75,700 million litres are allocated for MCGM usage. In addition to this, the Maharashtra government has sanctioned 1,37,000 million litres of water for Mumbai from Bhatsa and 91,130 million litres of water from the Upper Vaitarna dam for this season.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a partly cloudy sky with intermittent spells of moderate rain in Mumbai on Wednesday. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 33 degrees Celsius and 26 degrees Celsius.

For neighbouring Thane and Raigad districts, the IMD has issued a 'Yellow' alert with the probability of heavy rainfall at isolated places on Wednesday.

The IMD on Tuesday said that the southwest monsoon has covered the entire country six days ahead of the normal date.

"The southwest monsoon has further advanced into the remaining parts of Rajasthan, Haryana and Punjab today. Thus, it covered the entire country on 2nd July 2024, against the normal date of July 8 (six days before the normal date of covering the entire India)," the IMD said in a statement.
