Water Level In Mumbai Lakes At 18.73% On July 8; IMD Predicts Heavy Rainfall Today
The collective water stock in the seven reservoirs is now at 2,71,147 million litres till 6:00 am on Monday.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in Mumbai on Monday. The city recorded over 300 mm of rainfall at various places in six hours from 1 am to 7 am on July 8, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.
Heavy rains in some low-lying areas led to waterlogging and disruption of suburban train services. "To avoid inconvenience to students, a holiday for the first session is declared for all BMC, Government and Private schools and colleges in the Mumbai (BMC area)," the civic body said in a post on X.
The BMC said the useful water stock in reservoirs supplying water to the metropolis has increased to 18.73%, which was 21.57% on this day in 2023 and 25.94% in 2022. The collective water stock in the seven reservoirs is now at 2,71,147 million litres till 6:00 am on July 8.

The seven reservoirs that supply water to Mumbai are Bhatsa, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Tansa, Modak Sagar, Vihar and Tulsi - located in Mumbai, Thane and Nashik districts.
Mumbai needs around 4,000-4,500 million litres of water every day. To supply water to the entire Mumbai metropolitan city, the total useful water stock required is 14,47,363 million litres.
As per the latest BMC data, the water level in Tansa is at 40.69%. Modak Sagar is at 35.85%. The useful water stock in Middle Vaitarna is at 19.51% while Tulsi Lake is at 45.51% of its full capacity.
As per the release, from the gross useful contents of Bhatsa, 5,75,700 million litres are allocated for MCGM usage. In addition to this, the Maharashtra government has sanctioned 1,37,000 million litres of water for Mumbai from Bhatsa and 91,130 million litres of water from the Upper Vaitarna dam for this season.

Mumbai Lake Levels On July 8
Powai lake, one of the most important artificial lakes in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) area, started overflowing around 4.45 am on Monday. With a water holding capacity of 545 crore litres, the lake's water is used only for industrial purposes.
News agency ANI reported that BMC commissioner Bhushan Gagrani is monitoring the situation personally from the disaster control room.
Emergency personnel and officers, along with the emergency control room are stationed at various locations in Mumbai and are keeping an eye on all developments. All Deputy Commissioners, Assistant Commissioners, and other systems of the corporation are active at various locations.
