Mumbai Hit With Stormy Winds, Mercury Dips

Monday saw west-northwesterly winds hitting Mumbai at 20.4 kilometre per hour, according to the India Meteorological Department.

Mumbai and its suburban regions witnessed a dust storm on Monday. Thane, Navi Mumbai, Kalyan, Dombivli and Badlapur areas were hit by rain, with gale force winds around 3 p.m.

A quick scan of weather monitoring agencies showed a dip in temperature following the showers. At 5 p.m., the mercury was down 2 degree Celsius.

Hail rain also occurred in some areas, NDTV Marathi reported. Due to strong winds in Badlapur and surrounding areas, power supply was interrupted as a precaution. In the north of Mumbai, Palghar district experienced unseasonal rain and hailstorm at some places.

The city has been grappling with intense heat this summer. The monsoon season hits in early June.

The weather agency's latest update said thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and light-to-moderate spells of rain, with gusty winds reaching 40-50 km per hour, is very likely to occur at isolated places.

Operations at Mumbai airport resumed after a temporary suspension. The airport had temporarily suspended flight operations for around 66 minutes, due to low visibility, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport said in a media statement, adding that operations resumed at 5.03 p.m.

During the temporary suspension, the airport witnessed 15 diversions, it said.

Metro services were suspended between Aarey and Andheri East metro stations after a banner landed on the overhead wire due to strong winds, a spokesperson from Metro Rail said, according to a PTI report.

Suburban services on Central Railway were affected after an overhead equipment pole between Thane and Mulund stations got bent due to strong winds, an official said. Suburban services on the Main Line were suspended, the chief spokesperson of Central Railway said.
