Maharashtra is set to receive a significant infrastructure boost as the Cabinet chaired by PM Modi is expected to approve the Rs 76,000-crore Vadhavan Port Project on Wednesday, according to NDTV.

The Vadhavan Port in Palghar district boasts natural depth and strategic proximity to inland clusters, situated near upcoming dedicated freight corridors that promise reduced maintenance costs. The project aims to incorporate advanced cargo-handling systems designed to minimise environmental impact.

The new port will be developed by Vadhavan Port Project Ltd.—a joint venture between Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority Ltd. with a 74% stake and Maharashtra Maritime Board holding the rest of the stake—in two phases under the landlord model, according to government policy.

The project received preliminary approval by the central government on Feb. 13, 2020, and the terms of reference were also approved on Oct. 7 of the same year.

The Dahanu Taluka Environment Protection Authority approved the port on July 31, 2023.
