IMD Issues Heatwave And Heavy Rainfall Alert For These Places In India

Authorities have urged people to stay hydrated, avoid venturing out during peak heat hours, and wear loose, light-coloured clothing.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday issued heatwave alerts for several states in the northern and central regions of the country.

The Meteorological Department has also issued red alerts for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, and Idukki districts for Monday, May 20 and sounded orange alerts for four other districts, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, and Ernakulam for the day.

IMD Rainfall Warning

The IMD said that a cyclonic circulation lies over south interior Tamil Nadu and neighbourhood in low and mid-tropospheric levels. A trough runs from south Chhattisgarh to South Interior Karnataka and another trough runs from Marathwada to a cyclonic circulation over south interior Tamil Nadu in lower tropospheric levels. Under their influence:

  1. There will be fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds (40-50 kmph) likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, Kerala and Mahe, Lakshadweep, south Karnataka.

  2. Isolated to scattered light/moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) over Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Telangana and Rayalaseema during the next 7 days.

  3. Isolated heavy rainfall is very likely over coastal Karnataka from May 20 to 22, south interior Karnataka on May 21 and 22, and Lakshadweep during May 21.

  4. Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala and Mahe on May 22 and south interior Karnataka on May 20.

  5. Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is also very likely over Tamil Nadu and Kerala on May 20, 21

Heat Wave and Hot And Humid weather warning

The IMD has predicted heat wave conditions in several parts of northern India.

  • Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions is very likely in many pockets over Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi during May 20-21

  • Heatwave conditions are very likely in some parts of Uttar Pradesh, isolated pockets over Gujarat, Bihar, Jharkhand, and north Madhya Pradesh during May 20 and 21.

  • Heatwave conditions are likely in Gangetic West Bengal on May 20, and Odisha on May 20, 21.
