Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi this evening to review cyclone preparedness. The Chief Minister provided details on the ongoing relocation efforts and deployment of security forces, NDRF, and ODRAF for public safety. Following the discussion, PM Modi expressed satisfaction with the state's cyclone readiness. Earlier in the afternoon, the two leaders had also discussed the situation.

The severe cyclonic storm Dana over the northwest Bay of Bengal moved north-northwest at a speed of 13 kmph in the last six hours, centering at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 24 near latitude 19.8° N and longitude 87.5°E. It was positioned about 100 km east-southeast of Paradip, 130 km south-southeast of Dhamara, and 210 km south-southwest of Sagar Island in West Bengal, according to the latest IMD data.

The storm is likely to cross between Odisha's Puri and West Bengal's Sagar Island, near Bhitarkanika and Dhamara, between midnight of Oct. 24 and the morning of Oct. 25, with wind speeds of 100-110 kmph, gusting to 120 kmph.

Odisha government has released the control room numbers for various districts as Cyclone Dana approaches landfall. Emphasis has been placed on ensuring public convenience and effective management during storm situations. Control rooms have been established across districts to oversee rescue and relief operations, enhancing the state's preparedness for the impending storm.

IMD has shared the spiral structure of convective clouds associated with the Severe Cyclonic Storm Dana as seen from the Doppler Weather Radar at Paradip, Odisha from 4:15 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. on Oct. 24.

The flight operations at Kolkata's Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport are suspended from 1800 hours today to 0900 hours on Oct 25 due to predicted heavy winds and heavy rainfall, in view of Cyclone Dana impact on the coastal region of West Bengal.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said that the administration identified over 3.5 lakh people to be evacuated from low-lying areas of the state in the wake of the approaching cyclone Dana.

Urging people to take precautionary measures and cooperate with the administration and the police, she said 2,43,374 people have taken shelter in camps.

"For the purpose of evacuation from low-lying areas, we have identified 3,56,941 people," she told reporters at the state secretariat.

Normal life in Odisha's capital Bhubaneswar was disrupted on Thursday as Cyclone Dana approached the coast. Many residents stayed indoors, resulting in low vehicular traffic.

The city's airport suspended flights from 5 p.m. on Oct. 24 to 9 a.m. on Oct. 25, affecting 40 domestic and international flights.

Educational institutions were shut from Oct. 23 to 25, while government offices, banks, and businesses remained open with minimal crowds.

The Severe Cyclonic Storm Dana is very likely to move north-northwestwards and cross north Odisha and West Bengal coasts between Puri and Sagar Island close to Bhitarkanika and Dhamara (Odisha) during mid-night of Oct. 24 to morning of Oct. 25, 2024 as a severe Cyclonic Storm with a wind speed of 100-110 kmph gusting 120 kmph, according to latest updates from IMD updates.

As a result isolated extremely heavy rainfall is very likely over Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal on Oct. 24 and 25, 2024.

Low to moderate flash flood risks are expected over several watersheds and neighborhoods in the following meteorological sub-divisions over the next 24 hours:

• Odisha: Anugul, Baleshwar, Bauda, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Gajapati, Ganjam, Jagatsinghapur, Jajapur, Kandhamal, Kendujhar, Khordha, Mayurbhanj, Nayagarh, and Puri districts.

• Gangetic West Bengal: Bankura, East Medinipur, Paschim Medinipur, and South 24 Parganas districts.

Northwest Bay of Bengal: Gale wind speed reaching 95-105 kmph gusting to 115 kmph is prevailing. It is likely to increase gradually becoming 105-115 kmph gusting to 125 kmph from October 24 evening.

Adjoining areas of central Bay of Bengal: Gale wind speed reaching 95-105 kmph gusting to 115 kmph is prevailing and likely to continue till October 24 afternoon. It is likely to decrease gradually thereafter.

Along & off Odisha-west Bengal coasts: Gale wind speed reaching 60-70 kmph gusting to 80 kmph is prevailing. It would gradually increase becoming 100-110 kmph gusting to 120 kmph along & off north Odisha and east Medinipur district of West Bengal from 24th afternoon till morning of 25th October and decrease gradually thereafter. Gale wind speed reaching 60-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph is likely along & off south Odisha and remaining districts of coastal West Bengal from October 24 evening till 25th Oct morning and decrease gradually thereafter.

Adjoining areas of northeast Bay of Bengal: Squally wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph is likely to prevail till October 25 morning and decrease gradually thereafter.

South Jharkhand: Squally wind speed reaching 40-50 gusting to 60 kmph is very likely to prevail from morning of October 25 till evening of October 26.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi held a meeting with top state officials to review preparedness for cyclone Dana. All departments have been directed to hold detailed discussions with the Revenue Minister, Chief Secretary, Special Relief Commissioner and District Collectors of the 11 districts to be affected and take precautionary measures after analyzing the current situation of the storm.

"Around 3 lakh people have been shifted to safer places in the affected areas. A control room at the Special Relief Commissioner's office is functioning 24 hours a day and monitoring the situation," he said.

The IMD has advised total suspension of fishing operations on Thursday and Friday over Central and North Bay of Bengal.

Fishermen have been told not to venture into the sea and adjoining areas of central Bay of Bengal today.

Northwest and adjoining northeast Bay of Bengal and along and off Odisha, West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts till Friday.

On social media platform, X, India Meteorological Department said, under the influence of Severe Cyclonic Storm Dana, light to moderate rainfall has occurred along the coastal areas of North Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal.

As Cyclone Dana approaches the Odisha coast, authorities have urged devotees to avoid visiting the Jagannath Temple in Puri. Preparations are being expedited to minimise the impact of the cyclone on the historic 12th-century shrine.

Kolkata's Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International (NSCBI) airport has suspended flight operations from 6:00 p.m. today till 9:00 a.m. Friday in view of cyclone Dana. Heavy winds and heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected at Kolkata.

Public transportation to and from Kolkata's suburbs may be disrupted starting Thursday evening as Eastern and South Eastern Railways have cancelled numerous trains due to the approaching cyclone.

Over 170 express and passenger trains under the jurisdiction of South Eastern Railway have been cancelled, with departures scheduled till Oct 27. The SER zone, headquartered in Kolkata, covers West Bengal, Odisha, and Jharkhand.

Additionally, the Eastern Railway will suspend all EMU local train services from Sealdah station on its south and Hasnabad sections from 8:00 p.m. on Thursday until 10:00 a.m. on Friday. The Eastern Railway also cancelled 68 suburban trains on the Howrah division for Friday morning.

In anticipation of the severe impact of Cyclone Dana along the coast of Odisha and West Bengal, the Indian Navy is preparing to conduct Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations.

The Met department has mentioned some possible impacts of Cyclone Dana.

• Roads and railway services may be affected in coastal areas due to the cyclone.

• Localized Flooding of roads, water logging in low lying areas and closure of underpasses mainly in urban areas of the above region.

• Disruption of traffic in major cities and roadways due to water logging in roads and poor visibility due to heavy rain leading to increased travel time and incidents.

• Damage to power and communication lines.

• Localized Landslides/Mudslides/landslips/mud slips/land sinks/mud sinks.

• Major damage to thatched houses/ huts.

• Breaking of tree branches and uprooting of trees.

• Major damage to Kutcha and some damage to Pucca roads. Flooding of escape routes.

• Damage to horticulture and standing crops due to inundation and wind.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced that over 30% of the targeted 10 lakh people had been evacuated to safety by Wednesday evening as cyclone Dana approached the state's coastal region, posing a threat to nearly half of its population.

The government set a goal to evacuate 10,60,336 individuals from 14 districts. Evacuees are being provided with dry and cooked food, along with necessary arrangements in cyclone shelters. The chief minister assured that the state government is fully prepared to handle the situation and urged residents to stay safe and avoid panic.

Several districts in West Bengal experienced moderate to heavy rainfall on Thursday morning as severe cyclonic storm 'Dana' approached the state's coast and that of neighboring Odisha, according to the IMD.

As of 2:30 AM, the storm was located 280 km southeast of Paradip (Odisha) and 370 km south-southeast of Sagar Island (West Bengal).

The storm is expected to bring heavy rain to several southern Bengal districts, including Kolkata. The Met Department has advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea due to prevailing gale winds of 90-100 km/h, gusting up to 110 km/h over the northwest Bay of Bengal.

Odisha, West Bengal and Jharkhand have beefed up their preparations ahead of the landfall of Cyclone Dana.

The cyclone, with wind speeds expected to reach up to 120 kmph (75 mph), is likely to hit between Bhitarkanika National Park and Dhamra Port in Odisha between midnight and Friday morning, the India Meteorological Department said.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said more than 30% of the targeted 10 lakh people have been evacuated to safe places by Wednesday evening.

More than 1.14 lakh people in West Bengal have been evacuated to safer shelters so far, with severe cyclone 'Dana' approaching the adjacent Odisha coast, PTI reported.

Parts of Jharkhand could experience heavy to very heavy rainfall from Thursday night under the influence of the cyclonic storm, a Met Department official said. An ‘orange’ alert has been issued in the Kolhan region (West Singhbhum, Seraikela-Kharswan and East Singhbhum districts) for Friday, he said.
