IMD confirmed Cyclone Dana's landfall process has commenced, issuing warnings for Odisha and West Bengal.

Cyclone Dana Live Updates: Landfall Begins

The landfall process of a severe cyclonic storm Dana has commenced, IMD said in its latest bulletin. It is currently located approximately 50 km east-northeast of Paradip in Odisha, 40 km south-southeast of Dhamara, and 160 km southwest of Sagar Island of West Bengal.

The storm is expected to move north-northwest and cross the north Odisha and West Bengal coasts between Puri and Sagar Island, close to Bhitarkanika and Dhamara (Odisha), over the next three-to-four hours, IMD said, adding that the forward sector of the wall cloud region has begun entering land, and the landfall process will continue through the morning of Friday.

Authorities in Odisha and West Bengal evacuated lakhs of people, shut schools, cancelled more than 400 trains and suspended flight operations as they brace for severe cyclonic storm Dana, which is expected to make landfall in Odisha-between Bhitarkanika National Park and Dhamra Port past midnight at a speed of 120 kmph.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi this evening to review cyclone preparedness. The Chief Minister provided details on the ongoing relocation efforts and deployment of security forces, NDRF, and ODRAF for public safety. Following the discussion, PM Modi expressed satisfaction with the state's cyclone readiness. Earlier in the afternoon, the two leaders had also discussed the situation.

Cyclone Dana Live Updates: 120 Kmph Winds Expected As Storm Nears Odisha, West Bengal Coasts

The severe cyclonic storm Dana over the northwest Bay of Bengal moved north-northwest at a speed of 13 kmph in the last six hours, centering at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 24 near latitude 19.8° N and longitude 87.5°E. It was positioned about 100 km east-southeast of Paradip, 130 km south-southeast of Dhamara, and 210 km south-southwest of Sagar Island in West Bengal, according to the latest IMD data.

The storm is likely to cross between Odisha's Puri and West Bengal's Sagar Island, near Bhitarkanika and Dhamara, between midnight of Oct. 24 and the morning of Oct. 25, with wind speeds of 100-110 kmph, gusting to 120 kmph.
