Varanasi Lok Sabha Election Result: Modi Secures Third Term Victory By 1.5 Lakh Votes

Modi defeated Congress' Ajay Rai, who had secured 4,60,457 votes, trailing by a margin of 1,52,513 votes at around 5:13 p.m.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi from the Bharatiya Janata Party won a record third term, with 6,12,970 votes from the high profile Lok Sabha constituency of Varanasi. He defeated Indian National Congress candidate Ajay Rai, who had secured 4,60,457 votes, trailing by a margin of 1,52,513 votes at around 5:13 p.m.

All eyes were on this seat as Prime Minister Narendra Modi was up against Ajay Rai, the State Congress chief, who has run for this seat in both the 2019 and 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

The 2024 elections saw a male voter turnout of 54.2% and 45.7% women voters at the polling booths.

The seat had been won by BJP candidate Modi in the last two elections—2019 and 2014. In 2019, Modi had clinched victory against Shalini Yadav of Samajwadi Party by 4,79,505 votes, with a vote share of 63.6%.

Other key battles in the state include the Congress' Rahul Gandhi versus the Bhartiya Janta Party's Dinesh Pratap Singh in Raebareli, where Gandhi is leading comfortably at 6,84,598 votes, with a margin of 3,88,742. Smriti Irani was trailing Kishori Lal Sharma by 1,59,240 votes in Amethi, the Congress stronghold that she managed to wrest control of in the 2019 elections. Mainpuri saw SP's Dimple Yadav take over the seat vacated by Mulayam Singh with a comfortable margin of 2,21,639 votes against BJP's Thakur Jayvir Singh. In Ayodhya, BJP candidate Lallu Singh is currently (at 5:17 p.m.) lagging behind Awadesh Prasad of Samajwadi Party, who is in the lead with a margin of 49,233 seats.

The Varanasi constituency, comprising five Vidhan Sabha seats—Rohaniya, Varanasi North, Varanasi South, Varanasi Cantt, and Sevapuri—saw a voter turnout of 56.35% in the seventh and final phase of elections held on June 1, which was conducted across 57 Lok Sabha constituencies all over India. In 2019, this seat registered a turnout of 57%.
