Congress leader Shashi Tharoor won against Bharatiya Janata Party's Rajeev Chandrasekhar in Kerala's Thiruvananthapuram constituency. This is the fourth term the Congress leader has won from the seat.

With 3,58,155 votes, Tharoor led with a margin of 16,077 votes, against Chandrasekhar, who had 3,42,078 votes, as per the latest data from the Election Commission of India.

Tharoor had contested from Thiruvananthapuram for the 15th, 16th, and 17th Lok Sabha elections, all of which he won.

Chandrasekhar conceded defeat to Tharoor, Press Trust of India reported.

"It is disappointing that I couldn't win today," PTI quoted the Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology of India as saying. He added that he had fought a clean campaign.

"We have come very close and have set a record margin and vote share. It shows that people of Kerala are increasingly supporting the BJP," he said.

Voting in Thiruvananthapuram took place during phase two of the election on April 26.

Apart from Chandrasekhar and Tharoor, Communist Party of India candidate Pannyan Raveendran had also been in the fray for the seat.

Tharoor won the 2019 general elections by a margin of 99,989 votes, securing 4,16,131 votes. He defeated Kummanam Rajasekharan of the BJP, who had 3,16,142 votes.
