Bharatiya Janata Party leader Manoj Tiwari defeated Indian National Congress candidate Kanhaiya Kumar in the North-East Delhi seat by a margin of approximately 1.39 lakh votes during the counting of the Lok Sabha election results on Tuesday.

The two-time sitting MP got approximately 8.25 lakh votes, while 6.86 lakh votes were bagged by Kumar, according to the Election Commission of India website.

The seat, parts of which were affected by communal riots in 2020, went to polls in the sixth phase and recorded a turnout of 62.89%. The Congress contested the seat in an alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party as part of the INDIA bloc.

In 2019, the Bhojpuri singer-turned-politician had defeated Congress candidate and former Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit by over 3.6 lakh votes from the seat, which has a large section of Purvanchalis. He had a vote share of around 54%.

In 2009, the Congress had won the seat, which came into existence in 2008.

In 2019, Kumar made his election debut as a Communist Party of India candidate but faced defeat at the hands of the BJP's Giriraj Singh in Bihar's Begusarai constituency. He had joined the Congress in 2021.
