While the BJP-led NDA under Prime Minister Narendra Modi is seeking a stronger majority, the constituents of the opposition INDIA bloc are hoping for a rebound after facing reverses in the 2014 and 2019 elections.

Amongst the six phases of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, the fourth phase recorded the maximum voter turnout in percentage terms, while the fifth phase the lowest.

The dates for the phases:

  • Phase 1: April 19

  • Phase 2: April 26

  • Phase 3: May 7

  • Phase 4: May 13

  • Phase 5: May 20

  • Phase 6: May 25

  • Phase 7: June 1

Counting of votes will begin at 8 am on June 4. The anticipation of results is always high and people usually follow exit polls to gauge trends.

However, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has barred poll survey agencies and media companies from releasing any exit polls till the conclusion of the voting process.

What Are Exit Polls?

Exit polls are surveys conducted immediately after voters leave polling stations. They aim to predict the outcome of an election before official results are available. Exit polls are conducted with a sample of voters who are asked whom they voted for.

These samples are selected to reflect the overall voting population, accounting for variables like age, gender, and geographic location. This data is then analysed. Exit polls provide early insights into voting patterns and can highlight key trends and issues influencing voter decisions. Though exit polls may not give an accurate picture, they are widely popular as an indicator of voter sentiment.
