PM Narendra Modi hailed the BJP's stunning victory in the state elections in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. The BJP is set to form its first government in Odisha after the toppling the Naveen Patnaik-led BJD.

"Thank you Odisha! It’s a resounding victory for good governance and celebrating Odisha’s unique culture. BJP will leave no stone unturned in fulfilling the dreams of people and taking Odisha to new heights of progress. I am very proud of all our hardworking Party Karyakartas for their efforts," he said.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi secured a victory in the family pocket borough of Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh. He has already won the Wayanad seat from Kerala.

The margin of victory is 3.9 lakh.

In his first reaction on the results of the Lok Sabha elections, PM Narendra Modi thanked voters for electing the NDA for a record third term.

Even after using their high handedness, the people have shown that they want change. The results show that people are against the politics of hate," said AAP MP Sanjay Singh.

TMC candidate Sheikh Nurul Islam is leading from the Basirhat constituency by more than 2.26 lakh votes. Sandeshkhali, made headlines after reports of sexual abuse and land grab against Islam, falls under this seat. BJP candidate Rekha Patra, who led the protests against Islam, is trailing the TMC leader.

Former BJP Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has secured his victory in Haveri Lok Sabha seat with a margin of 43,513 votes.

The party has also bagged Dakshina Kannada and Chitradurga seats.

Former CM HD Kumaraswamy has been declared the winner from Karnataka's Mandya Lok Sabha seat. He won with a margin of 2.84 lakh votes over his Congress rival.

The party's Kolar candidate M Mallesh Babu also secured a victory.

Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray)'s Arvind Sawant is leading by a margin of 43,561 votes over Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde)'s Yamini Yashwant Jadhav in the fight for the high profile Lok Sabha constituency of Mumbai South, according to the latest data from the Election Commission of India as of 4 p.m.

"We entered this election with the intent to win 26 out of 26 seats like before. Though owing to some shortcomings in our efforts or because of some disappointment among our voters, we did not win all. Having said that, we have won on 24 seats with complete majority. We have won a similar vote share as before," CR Patil said.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi will address the media at 5:30 p.m. today at the party headquarters.

Over speculations of him speaking to JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar and Chandrababu Naidu, NCP-SCP chief Sharad Pawar said, "I have not spoken with anyone yet."

Indian equity market tumbled to log its worst session in over four years as poll trends indicated the BJP failing to reach the majority mark on its own in the Lok Sabha elections. The NSE Nifty 50 closed 5.93% or 1,379.4 points higher at 21,884.5, while the S&P BSE Sensex ended 5.74% or 4,389.7 points up at 72,079.

Intraday, Nifty fell as much as 8.52% to 21,281.4, the highest intraday fall since March 23, 2020.

Powered by a better-than-expected show from Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's JD(U), the ruling NDA was poised to retain the upper hand in the state where its candidates were leading in 31 out of 40 Lok Sabha seats.

The oath taking ceremony has been scheduled for June 9 at Amravati, NDTV reported quoting sources.

Indian equity indices plummeted nearly 8% on Tuesday as the NDA struggled to even touch 300 seats while the BJP hovered around 240, drawing a massive upset on exit poll predictions.

At 11:37 a.m., the S&P BSE Sensex fell 3,160 points, or 4.13% to 73,307, while the NSE Nifty 50 was trading 982 points, or 4.22% lower at 22,281. Intraday, Nifty fell as much as 5.43% to 22,000 marking the biggest fall since May 4, 2020, while Sensex declined 5.4% to 72,337.

During the session, the Nifty 50 companies' market capitalisation loss widened to Rs 9 lakh crore, while the Nifty recorded its biggest intraday decline in over two years.

Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Kangana Ranaut was leading against Indian National Congress's Vikramaditya Singh by a margin of 50,498 votes from the Mandi constituency of Himachal Pradesh during the counting of the Lok Sabha election results on Tuesday, according to data from Election Commission of India.

Ranaut, who made her electoral debut, got approximately 3.78 lakh votes so far, while Singh bagged 3.27 lakh votes, around 12:02 a.m.

Singh is the son of former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, while Ranaut has replaced Ram Swaroop Sharma as the BJP's choice for the constituency who won the 2019 elections from the Mandi.

Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSRCP is staring a big defeat in the Andhra Pradesh state assembly elections. The party is leading in only 22 seats.

The NDA bloc is likely to form the next government. TDP is ahead in 126 seats, BJP in 7 and Janasena Party in 7.

The majority mark in the 173-seat assembly is 87.

Indian stock markets reacted negatively after Tuesday morning trends showed the BJP-led NDA not doing as well as expected and losing ground in states like UP and Maharashtra.

Nifty 50 recorded its biggest intraday decline in over two years.

Equity gauges tanked over 3% in early trade. As of 9:30 a.m., the S&P BSE Sensex was 2,394 points, or 3.13% down at 74,074, while the NSE Nifty 50 was 850 points or 3.66% lower at 22,413.

PM Modi is trailing in Varanasi by over 6,000 votes as of 9.30 a.m.

The BJP is leading in 22 seats in Gujarat, but it is still not a walkover for the party in PM Modi's bastion. The Congress is ahead in 4.

Maharashtra is now a neck-to-neck! Both INDIA and NDA blocs are ahead in 21 seats as of 9:25 a.m.

The BJP is ahead in 143 seats across India, compared to Congress leads in 61, as per election commission data.

The Samajwadi Party is leading in more seats than the BJP in battleground BJP. It is leading in 26 seats, while BJP is ahead in 22. Congress is leading in 6.

National Conference leader Omar Abdullah and Sajad Gani Lone of the People Conference are trailing in the Baramulla seat of Jammu and Kashmir. Independent candidate Abdul Rashid Sheikh is in the lead from the seat.

Asaduddin Owaisi from the All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen party currently has a slight lead from the Lok Sabha constituency of Hyderabad, as per ECI data. He is facing Madhavi Latha Kompella of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Uttar Pradesh is looking rather close than expected. The INDIA bloc of Samajwadi Party and Congress is ahead in 33 seats, against the NDA's 34.

JDS's candidate, HD Kumaraswamy, is currently in the lead in the Lok Sabha constituency of Mandya in Karnataka in the initial ballot trends, according to the latest data from the Election Commission of India.

The constituency went for voting on April 26 during Phase-II of the election.

The candidates for the Lok Sabha elections in 2024 were HD Kumaraswamy from the Janata Dal (Secular) and Venkatarame Gowda from the Indian National Congress.

Indian National Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is leading from the Raebareli constituency in Uttar Pradesh during the initial rounds of counting.

The local currency weakened 10 paise to open at 83.24 against the U.S dollar. It closed at 83.14 on Monday.

The NDA is ahead in more than 272 seats -- the majority mark needed in Lok Sabha to form a government -- as of 9:00 a.m.

Home Minister Amit Shah from the Bharatiya Janata Party is currently leading the Lok Sabha constituency of Gandhinagar in Gujarat, according to the latest postal ballot data from the Election Commission of India. The EVM counting will commence soon. Amit Shah is leading with 35,000 votes in initial postal ballot trends. In the Gandhinagar constituency, BJP candidate Amit Shah is contesting again

In Punjab, AAP is ahead on Hoshiarpur, Sangrur and Anandpur Sahib seats of Punjab. The party is also leading on South Delhi seat.

The NDA comprising of BJP and JDS is way ahead of rival Congress in Karnataka. The alliance is leading on 22 seats, while Congress is ahead in just 3.

The BJP is leading in West Bengal in 19 seats, against the TMC's 17.

The opposition INDIA bloc is leading in hotly-contested Maharashtra. It is ahead on 22 seats, compared to NDA at 18.

Poll officials have started counting the votes polled in the EVMs.

"People of India voted to bless Narendra Modi for the efforts towards nation building," said BJP leader Piyush Goyal while talking to reporters in Mumbai. Modi government will return to serve the nation once again, Goyal said.

The Union cabinet minister is leading from Mumbai North Lok Sabha seat as per the early trends.

The contest is heating up! The opposition INDIA bloc in past 100 in trends from postal ballot counting. NDA is yet comfortable over 160.

PM Narendra Modi is leading in his constituency of Varanasi, as per trends at 8:30 a.m. He won the seat in 2014 and 2019 with big margins.

The GIFT Nifty, an early indicator of the Nifty 50 Index’s performance in India, was down 59 or 0.25% at 23,455 as of 08:28 a.m.

The BJP-led NDA is leading in more than a 100 seats. The INDIA bloc is not very far behind, with leads in over 80 seats.

Piyush Goyal leads on Mumbai North seat. Supriya Sule ahead from Baramati. Nitin Gadkari ahead from Nagpur, while Shrikant Shinde ahead from Kalyan. Ujjwal Nikam in the lead from Mumbai North Central.

Goyal and Gadkari are Union Ministers with commerce and industry and road transport portfolios, respectively.

Along with the Lok Sabha election, the counting of votes for Andhra Pradesh and Odisha state assembly elections is also underway.

The early trends of postal ballots at 8:15 a.m. shows the NDA leading in 42 seats, whereas INDIA is at 28.

The early trends of postal ballots at 8:05 a.m. shows the NDA leading in 13 seats, whereas INDIA is at 5.

In a house of 543 members, the majority mark is 272. This figure is popularly called the 'magic number'.

A total of 131 seats (24.03%) are reserved for representatives of Scheduled Castes (84) and Scheduled Tribes (47). The quorum for the House is 10% of the total membership.

The counting of votes polled in the EVMs has commenced.

In each round of counting, votes from 14 EVMs are counted under the supervision of the returning officer. This occurs in one large hall. At the end of each round of counting, the results from 14 EVMs are declared.

The results of five random EVMs from every assembly segment are verified against the VVPAT. Once votes from all EVMs, electronically transferred postal ballots, and postal ballots have been counted, the returning officer declares the results of the constituency.

In case there's a discrepancy between the EVM results and the VVPAT results, the VVPAT results will be used. However, there's no statement on whether such a discrepancy will lead to recounting/verification of all other EVMs in the constituency or not.

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge issued an appeal to the country's bureaucrats -- who play a key role in the counting of votes -- asking them to serve the nation without fear. His appeal come on the heels of the allegation by party's senior leader Jairam Ramesh, that Union Home minister Amit Shah had called up 150 district officers ahead of tomorrow's counting of votes and attempted to intimidate them.

"Do not get intimidated by anyone. Do not bow down to any Unconstitutional means. Do not be afraid of anyone and discharge your duties, based on merit, on this counting day," Mr Kharge wrote in the open letter he posted on X, formerly Twitter.

"Independence of the institutions is paramount, for every civil servant takes oath of the Constitution that they 'will faithfully and conscientiously discharge their duties and will do right to all manner of people in accordance with the Constitution and the law, without fear or favour, affection or ill-will'," he said.

There are five states, which will decide the course of 2024 elections. These states account for 238 seats and 44% of Lok Sabha strength. The five deciding states are Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Bihar and West Bengal. These are called battleground states because both NDA and INDIA bloc hope to make gains in these states.

The Lok Sabha Election of 2024 has witnessed a notable presence of affluent candidates vying for parliamentary seats across the country. With wealth becoming a significant factor in Indian politics, this election cycle sees a remarkable number of rich candidates in the fray.

• Competing for the Guntur seat in Andhra Pradesh, Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani of the Telugu Desam Party tops the list of richest candidates with assets worth Rs 5,706 crore.

• Konda Vishweshwar Reddy, contesting from the Chevella seat in Telangana, is the second richest candidate, boasting assets worth Rs 4,568 crore.

• South Goa candidate Pallavi Shrinivas Dempo, representing Bharatiya Janata Party, also stands as one of the richest candidates with declared assets amounting to Rs 1,361 crore.

Once all Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) for a specific round have been tallied, and the Election Commission Observer has conducted a parallel count of two randomly chosen EVMs, the tabulation for the round is carried out.

The Returning Officer (RO) then announces the results of that round and signs the pertinent record (Part II of Form 17C). Subsequently, the RO/ Assistant Returning Officer (ARO) verbally permits the EVMs for the next round to be transferred from the secure room to the counting area.

The verification of Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) starts after all rounds of EVM counting have been finalized. This verification process is conducted sequentially, not simultaneously, for all polling stations. On average, it typically takes approximately an hour to authenticate the slips from each VVPAT machine.

Absentee voting is conducted through postal ballots in India. The following groups of people are eligible for postal ballots:

• Military and government workers on election duty are away from home.

• People who cannot go to the polling station due to work, sickness or disability.

• Election workers at a different polling station.

• Those detained before the election.

As per the Supreme Court, the postal ballots must be counted and declared first. In 2019, this was ignored, and EVM votes were counted and declared first. Due to this, there was a huge outcry in certain constituencies where the margin of victory was less than the number of postal ballots.

1. The electronic voting machines will be unsealed in the presence of representatives of all political parties.

2. Postal ballots will be counted first. EVM vote counting will begin half an hour after that.

3. Votes registered across all EVMs of a parliamentary constituency are counted; results are announced and written on a blackboard before moving on to the next round of counting.

4. This is done electronically through the in-built features of the EVM. The Election Commission implemented the VVPAT (Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail) system in 2013 to verify the counting results and ensure that the EVMs are working as per standard.

5. VVPAT is connected to all EVMs. When a vote is cast, the VVPAT system generates a corresponding paper slip, which is visible to the voter for around seven seconds before falling into a deep box.

6. On counting day, the ECI verifies EVM results from five randomly selected assembly segments per constituency.

7. When all the above measures are taken and a final tally is reached, the winning candidate of the PC is declared.

The 2024 Lok Sabha elections were conducted in seven phases between April 19 and June 1, in the midst of an excruciating summer in India. The elections were called by the Election Commission in mid March.

The exercise was particularly tough this year. Lower voter turnout in initial phases raised concerns over the impact of heatwaves in parts of the country. The ECI said it was making arrangements to aid poll officials and voters.

The day India has been waiting for months is here. Result trends will start to trickle in from 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday to decide the winners of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in 542 seats. The count of postal ballots will start first across all counting centres.

As per the Election Commission of India, a record-breaking 64.2 crore voters, including 31.2 crore women, participated in the Lok Sabha elections. The grand democratic exercise was overseen by 68,000 monitoring teams and 1.5 crore polling and security personnel in the world’s largest electoral exercise.

The polls are a test for Congress and its preeminent leader Rahul Gandhi, following two successive defeats in the 2014 and 2019 general elections. The Congress has also led the formation of the INDIA bloc of 23 opposition parties with the aim of preventing the division of votes and dethroning the Modi government from power.

PM Narendra Modi has led the campaign from the front, being the message and the messenger himself for the BJP and the NDA coalition. The incumbent alliance won 353 seats in 2019 and the PM has set a target of '400 paar' this time.
