Counting is underway in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Telangana and Chhattisgarh.

Assembly Elections 2023: Counting In Four States To Start At 8 A.M.

The counting of votes for the four of the five state assembly elections that were held in November will begin at 8 a.m. Postal ballots will be counted first, followed by those of EVMs. The Election Commission has postponed the counting in Mizoram to Dec. 4.

Between Nov. 7 and Nov. 30, while Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Telangana and Mizoram voted in a single phase, Chhattisgarh saw two rounds of polling.

Voter Turnout In Assembly Elections 2023

Chhattisgarh (Nov. 7 and 17):

The polls in Chhattisgarh were held in two phases for 70 assembly seats. Phase one saw a turnout of 71.11%, while the second reported 69.03%.

Mizoram (Nov. 7):

The voter turnout was 80.43% for the 40-seat legislative assembly in Mizoram.

Madhya Pradesh (Nov. 17):

In Madhya Pradesh, 72.05% of voters exercised their franchise for elections to 230 Assembly seats.

Rajasthan (Nov. 25):

The turnout in 199 seats in Rajasthan reached 75.45%. The state has a total of 200 assembly seats, but polling in the Karanpur seat of Sriganganagar district was postponed following the death of Congress candidate Gurmeet Singh Koonar.

Telangana (Nov. 30)

The southern state saw polling of 63.94% for its 119-seat Legislative Assembly.

Exit Poll Trends For Assembly Elections 2023

Most exit polls on Thursday predicted the BJP is set for a comfortable win in Madhya Pradesh, while it also leads in Rajasthan. MP was seen to be an uphill task, with reported anti-incumbency and fatigue with the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government. Rajasthan, on the other hand, may well follow its 25-year-old pattern of voting the incumbent out every election—this time being the Ashok Gehlot-led Congress.

The Congress is expected to retain power in Chhattisgarh, albeit with a smaller majority. The grand old party is also projected to win in Telangana, the second southern state after Karnataka to possibly fall in its kitty.

Telangana CM KCR is staring at a defeat, though his party is still projected to be running a close second to the Congress. The BJP may be confined to single digits.

Exit Polls 2023: Congress Gets Chhattisgarh, Telangana; BJP To Sweep MP; Rajasthan Close

Key Headwinds In Assembly Elections 2023

Over the course of November, the fate of over 5,000 candidates in the fray in five assembly elections were sealed. According to political observers, a close contest is expected in the Hindi heartland states of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, and in Telangana.

In Rajasthan, the incumbent Ashok Gehlot-led Congress government stares at the revolving door pattern in the state, where voters have changed governments every five years for the past quarter century. Based on that precedent, the BJP is in a position to win back power.

In Madhya Pradesh, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan's reign of nearly 15 years has brought about fatigue. The BJP has had an uninterrupted spell in power since 2003, except for a brief 15-month period after the 2018 polls, when the Congress managed to form the government. The Kamal Nath-led Congress has campaigned heavily this time to ride on anti-incumbency, and welfare and caste politics.

India's newest state, Telangana, is just a decade old and in that time has only seen one party in power—the Bharat Rashtra Samithi. Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao is hoping to clinch a third term, but his government faces anti-incumbency at the local level. The Congress, energised by its victory in neighbouring Karnataka in May, has campaigned fiercely and is expected to gain significantly. The BJP is likely to be a marginal player.

Mizoram Assembly Polls: Counting Of Votes Deferred

The counting of votes in Mizoram will take place on Dec. 4, a day after it was originally scheduled, the Election Commission said on Friday. It said the decision was taken following representations from various quarters requesting for a change in the date of counting from Dec. 3 on the ground that Sunday holds a special significance for the people of Mizoram, a Christian-majority state.

The voter turnout was 80.43% for the 40-seat Legislative Assembly in Mizoram. The current ruling Mizo National Front is facing challenge from the main opposition Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) and the Congress.

How Telangana Voted In 2018

K Chandrashekar Rao went for early elections in December 2018, nine months before the completion of his term. This election led to the alliance of Telugu Desam Paryu and Congress, Communist Party of India (CPI), coming together as part of Praja or Maha Kutami for the first time.

  • TRS (now BRS): 88 (46.87%)

  • Congress+: 21 (32.8%)

  • BJP: 1 (6.98%)

  • AIMIM: 7 (2.71%)

  • Others: 2

How Madhya Pradesh Voted In 2018

The Madhya Pradesh assembly election led to a hung assembly, with the Congress emerging as the single largest party and the BJP winning the popular vote. The Congress was able to stitch up a majority by drawing in support of BSP, SP and some Independent MLAs. Kamal Nath took charge as the CM.

The government, however, collapsed in March 2020 after Gwalior heavyweight Jyotiraditya Scindia led a faction of his loyalists to defect from Congress to the BJP. In the ensuing byelections, most turncoats won and the BJP maintained a comfortable majority.

  • Congress: 114 (40.89%)

  • BJP: 109 (41.02%)

  • Others: 7

How Rajasthan Voted In 2018

The Congress became the single largest party with 100 seats, short of the majority by 1 seat. The party formed the government with the Bahujan Samaj Party. The BJP won 73 seats, much lower compared to the previous election. Ashok Gehlot took charge as CM, while Sachin Pilot was sworn in as Deputy CM.

  • Congress: 100 (39.3%)

  • BJP: 73 (38.08%)

  • Independents: 13 (9.5%)

  • BSP: 6 (4%)

  • Others: 8

How Chhattisgarh Voted In 2018

The Congress got a landslide victory winning 68 seats against the ruling BJP's 15 seats, and consequently formed the government after 15 years as opposition party. Elected to the Assembly from Patan, Bhupesh Baghel took office as the third Chief Minister of the state.

  • Congress: 68 (43%)

  • BJP: 15 (33%)

  • Others: 7

Counting Of Votes Start In Rajasthan, MP, Chhattisgarh And Telangana

The counting of votes for the four of the five state assembly elections that were held in November has started.

Assembly Election Results 2023: What Is Postal Ballot?

Postal voting is done only through the Electronically Transmitted Postal Ballot Papers (ETPB) system where ballot papers are distributed to the registered eligible voters and they return the votes by post. When the counting of votes commences, these postal votes are counted first before the counting of votes from the electronic voting machines of all other voters.

Only certain categories of people are eligible to register as postal voters. People working in the union armed forces and state police as well as their wives, and government employees who are officially posted abroad can register for the postal vote, these are also called service voters. Additionally, people in preventive detention, disabled and those above the age of 65 years old can use postal vote.

Assembly Elections 2023: Lok Sabha Strength Of States

Lok Sabha elections will be held in the summer of 2024. Cues on which way the wind is blowing among voters can be seen in the this round of assembly elections. Though, it has been observed that voters make a distinction between assembly and parliamentary elections, which tends to show up in different results.

Here's the strength of the four states in the national parliament.

Assembly Results 2023: Congress Out Of Hindi Heartland, Only Solace In Telangana

The Bharatiya Janata Party is set to retain Madhya Pradesh with a much bigger majority and is on track to dethrone the Congress in Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan, wiping out the grand old party from the Hindi heartland that sends more than 200 members to the Lok Sabha.

The trends so far deal a blow to the Congress’ ambition of coming back ahead of the general election. And the concern was evident when it called a meeting of the INDIA alliance on Dec. 6 even as counting was on.

The only solace for it is Telangana. The party is leading comfortably in the state with 67 leads in a 120-member house, marking its return in the state after it was nearly wiped out following the bifurcation of the combined Andhra Pradesh.

Chhattisgarh is an upset of sorts as all pollsters had predicted the Congress to win, riding on the image of Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel. But the BJP was leading in 52 seats to the Congress’ 36 at 12:00 p.m. as the contest turned out to be much closer than predicted.

Madhya Pradesh has been a one-sided contest despite expectations of a close fight on 15 years of anti-incumbency for the BJP. Yet, as exit polls had predicted, the BJP was leading on more than 155 seats.

Rajasthan is set to maintain its record of changing governments every five years as the BJP is likely to wrest control from Ashok Gehlot-led government, leading on 114 seats.

I wish the new government all the best", Ashok Gehlot, chief minister of Rajasthan said on X.

"My advice to him is that despite working hard, we were not successful, it does not mean that he should not work after coming to the government", he added.
