Amethi Lok Sabha Election Results: Smriti Irani Concedes Defeat To Kishori Lal Sharma
The constituency of Amethi was formerly the bastion of the Indian National Congress.
Bharatiya Janata Party leader Smriti Irani has officially conceded the Amethi Lok Sabha seat, as per a press conference held on Tuesday. Indian National Congress candidate Kishori Lal Sharma was leading from the Amethi constituency with 5,36,680 votes, according to data from the Election Commission of India at around 6:34 p.m. Irani was trailing with 3,70,754 votes, while Lal Sharma was leading by 1,65,926 votes.

The constituency of Amethi, former bastion of the Indian National Congress and a seat which had always been held by the party until the 2019 elections, has become a significant battleground due to its key contenders—Smriti Irani from the Bharatiya Janata Party and Kishori Lal of the Congress.

This constituency has been a stronghold of Congress with the party winning up until the 2019 elections. Irani had won with a margin of 55,120 votes in the 2019 election, with a vote share of 49.69%. In 2014, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had won his third term as Member of Parliament with a total of 6,44,822 votes and a vote share of 46.72%.

With Gandhi now absent from the fight, Lal has stepped in to offer tough competition to Irani. Lal, the right-hand man of the Gandhi family, has served an important role in handling matters related to the Gandhi family's rule in Amethi and Raebareli for decades. While, Irani has had an aggressive campaign for the seat.
The constituency has five Vidhan Sabha seats—Tiloi, Salon (SC), Jagdishpur (SC), Gauriganj and Amethi. It saw a voter turnout of 54.34% in the fifth phase of elections held on May 20. Among the voters, 52.48% were male, while female voter turnout was 47.51%.
