What You See In Budget Is What’s Happening In Finance Ministry: Nirmala Sitharaman

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said taxpayers are understanding the budget, thanks to transparency and simplification.

The annual budget process has now become more transparent, effectively showing how taxpayer money must be used, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said.

“Every activity of the finance ministry which forms a part of the financial statement will have to be explicitly shown, so for that we have taken a lot of steps and bought every out of the budget borrowing also on to board,” she told NDTV in an exclusive interview. “Therefore, what you have seen in the budget is actually happening in the finance ministry.”

Not only the budgeting process but also the budget language has also been simplified for the citizens to take notes and better understand the changes and application. Sitharaman said the budget has to be a transparent and credible statement and should speak for itself. 

In a series of posts on X, formerly known as Twitter, the finance minister said, “Over the years, our Budget documents are simplified in terms of language, focusing on basic English/Hindi, (therefrom translated to other regional languages) so readers across the country can understand our plans for the year. This has been done without compromising transparency, as all relevant data and documents are provided in annexures.”

In a series of posts, Sitharaman spoke on the government's work on advancement of budget cycle, merger of rail budget with general budget, plan and non-plan classification of budget and accounts removed.

She also spoke about transparency in budget numbers, rationalisation of supplementary demand for grants, increase in the corpus of Contingency Fund of India, Digital Budget and Treasury Single Account.
