The GST Council, in its 53rd meeting chaired by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday, exempted railway services including platform tickets from Goods and Services Tax.
Along with platform tickets, services like cloak room services, waiting rooms, retiring rooms and battery-operated car services will also attract no levies under the indirect tax regime. Intra-railway supply and selling of commodity will also be exempted from GST.
The matter of GST on online gaming was not on the agenda for today's meeting and was not discussed today, said Sitharaman.
Hostel accommodation services that are outside educational institutions are to be exempted from Goods and Service Tax, the GST Council decided. The exemption is only up to Rs 20,000 per person in a month and only applicable in hostels where the users stay for at least three months.
The Council also recommended an uniform rate of 12% for all milk cans, regardless of their material.
The GST levied on carton boxes of corrugated and non-corrugated paper will be reduced to 12% from 18%. This move is taken to specifically help the apple growers of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, Sitharaman said.
The GST Council suggested a 12% of GST for all types of sprinklers, including fire extinguishing water sprinklers, all solar cookers, whether single or dual source.
