The total number of confirmed Covid-19 infections in India inched closer to the 12,000-mark, a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the nationwide lockdown will be extended to May 3.

India has added 1,118 new Covid-19 cases taking the total number to 11,933 as on Wednesday evening, according to the health ministry’s website. This includes 1,344 who have been discharged and 392 deaths.

The number of active cases in India has crossed 10,000 for the first time today.

While it took the country 70 days to report its first 5,000 cases, the next 5,000 have come in just six days, indicating a rise rate of the infection. Recoveries, however, improved over Monday and Tuesday with India reporting more 200 patients who’ve been discharged. However, recoveries fell to 154 today.

Four states and union territories—Maharashtra, Delhi, Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan—account for more than half of the cases in India.

Gujarat Death Toll Rises To 33

Five more coronavirus patients died in Gujarat on Wednesday, taking the death toll due to the pandemic in the state to 33, a senior health department official said.

Three deaths were reported in Ahmedabad and one each in Vadodara and Surat, Principal Health Secretary Jayanti Ravi said. One of the deceased, a 14-year-old girl, suffered from a brain ailment, while a 45-year-old woman who died in Surat suffered from hypertension.

Of three Covid-19 patients who died in Ahmedabad, a 55-year-old woman suffered from heart disease. Two others were a 40-year-old woman and a 65-year-old woman, Ravi said.

Two More Deaths In Tamil Nadu

Two men died of Covid-19 in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday and 38 more people tested positive, taking the total number of coronavirus cases in the state to 1,242, Health Minister C Vijayabaskar said.

Total number of deaths in the State now stands at 14. The mortality rate in Tamil Nadu yesterday was 0.9 percent and today it is 1.1 percent, the minister said. “It is under control.”

Himachal Pradesh Cases Climb To 36

Two more persons tested positive for Covid-19 on Wednesday, taking the total number of coronavirus cases in Himachal Pradesh to 36, a senior official said.

One person each from Kangra and Chamba district tested positive at Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College in Kangra district, officials said. Their history could not be immediately known. However, one of the two positive persons is said to be a journalist who travelled to Himachal Pradesh from Punjab's Jalandhar recently, sources said.

A total of 115 samples were tested on Wednesday at IGMC Shimla, Dr. RPGMC Tanda and CRI Kasauli. Two of them tested positive, 23 are tested negative. Report of the rest 90 samples is still awaited, a health official said.

The number of active cases in the state has risen to 18. They are being treated in various hospitals of the state.

183 More Test Positive In Mumbai

As many as 183 new coronavirus cases were reported in Mumbai on Wednesday, taking the tally to 1,936, while two more patients succumbed to the infection in the city, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said.

The death toll due to the pandemic rose to 113 in the city with two more patients, one of them a senior citizen, succumbing during the day, it added. Seventeen more patients were discharged from hospitals after recovering from the deadly disease, taking the number of cured cases to 181, the BMC said.

As many as 261 persons were admitted to hospitals in the city during the day for suspected viral infection, the BMC said in a release.


India Identifies 170 Hotspots

India’s health ministry has identified 170 districts as Covid-19 hotspots in the country, and 207 districts as potential hotspots.

Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh have the most hotspots.
