Coronavirus cases in India continue to rise - even though at a relatively slower rate - after the government announced the fifth phase of lifting lockdown restrictions to revive an economy that’s headed toward a rare annual contraction.
India added 74,000 fresh cases in a day, taking the total tally to over 66 lakh in Asia’s third-largest economy, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on Oct. 5. This includes over 1 lakh deaths and nearly 56 lakh patients who have recovered.
Key figures:
- Total number of confirmed coronavirus cases: 66,23,815
- Active cases: 9,34,427
- Cured/discharged/migrated: 55,86,703
- Deaths: 1,02,685
- Number of fresh cases in last 24 hours: 74,442
- One-day recoveries: 76,737
- One-day deaths: 903
India reported less than one thousand deaths for the second consecutive day, today.
An average of 1,000 deaths have been reported each day over the last week, ahead of the U.S. and Brazil’s average of 700. India is trailing these two countries in overall deaths.
The coronavirus has now killed more than 1 lakh people in India and is taking more lives each day than anywhere else in the world. The world’s second-most infected nation, which reported its first Covid-19 case on Jan. 30, accounts for about 10% of global coronavirus deaths.
Global Update
Global coronavirus infections surpassed 35 million as of Monday morning. Focus remained on the health of U.S. President Donald Trump, who may be discharged from the hospital as early as Monday. Doctors said Trump was given a drug typically used in more severe patients, amid contradictory and confusing accounts about the president’s infection.
France plans to shut down bars in the Paris region, according to a report, while New York City will close schools and non-essential businesses in nine hotspots. U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned of a “very tough” winter.

India Reports Less Than 80,000 New Cases For Three Days, Active Cases Fall
The nation with 1.3 billion people is only behind the U.S. in the number of confirmed infections, with no sign of the virus curve flattening. While new cases have been falling, the rate of fresh infections is still the fastest in the world.
However, after reaching nearly 98,000 cases on Sept. 17, daily additions have remained below the 90,000 mark for 15 straight days and below the 80,000 mark for three days now.
Active cases have fallen below 9.4 lakh aided by higher recoveries. That’s just 14.3 % of the total case load.
