Why SpiceJet Meals May Taste Different

Have you noticed something different about the food being served on-board SpiceJet? If you have, it is probably because SpiceJet has a new caterer and has revamped its on-board menu.

"We have re-invested in the brand, we have changed the caterer. The food has always been a distinguishing factor of the SpiceJet flying experience. We have made significant in improving the on-board menu options," SL Narayanan, group chief financial officer (CFO), Sun Group told NDTV. Kalanithi Maran-led Sun Group owns SpiceJet. (Watch)

SpiceJet handed over on-board catering responsibilities to Taj SATS and Cafe Coffee Day (CCD) towards the end of May, offering a new menu- titled 'Hot Meals, Warm Smiles' (See the menu).

Mumbai-based chain of hotels- Narang International Hotels was earlier handling the catering for SpiceJet under the brand name Ambassador Sky Chef and subsequently took the airline to court over non-payment of dues amounting to Rs 8 crore.

SpiceJet is on a cost-rationalisation drive and has been shutting down flights to any route that has not been generating returns. The budget carrier posted a first quarter net loss of Rs 124 crore, its fourth consecutive quarterly loss.

"Every point on the network under intense scrutiny, if it doesn't generate a positive contribution we just shut it down. So Pondicherry, Mysore, Trichy, Allahabad, Guangzhou, some other names don't come to my mind readily. So we have got rid of several flights that did not make any financial sense," Mr Narayanan said.
